Netball clean sweep

B Reserve claim first win

B RESERVE netball team finally got a win on the board getting up by one point. Well done, girls.

A and B Grade had wins as well.

The day was not so successful over on the footy ground and I had to listen to my Bombers’ team song too many times.

Not much water last year

WE may have copped a record flood in our district last year but in the big picture, there must have been bugger-all water in the system compared to 1956.

We came back through “crow eating” country from our drive around.

We called in at Lock 2, west of Berri, on the Murray River. They had all the levels for the 1900s on the board.

The Murray got to just below 11.2 metres which was higher than any other flood in the 1900s, except for 1956.

Evidently, 1956 got to almost 13m and 450,000 megalitres per day. They have not put up the flow from 2023 yet but it would be only around 250,000 to 300,000 ML per day going by the water levels.

I do not think we need a 1956 flow through our district to see what happens. Our 2022 flood was their 2023 flood.

Help our hostel

THE Edward River Gardens Hostel in Moulamein is 100 per cent tax deductible for anyone that would like to help out with the activities and lifestyle costs of our great facility. Every dollar you donate, you get 48 per cent returned. Not a bad deal if you are in the highest tax bracket and have a few quid to spare.

El Nino not so bad

IF this is what the new El Nino is like after climate change, bring it on. The district is a picture and the rivers are at a great level and only going to get better.

Match review

I WAS a bit annoyed last week when Ultima asked for a review of our match and cost one of our players a one-week suspension.

Moulamein never gets into this crap. We take it like a black chook every time it happens.

The incident was not behind the play. The umpires saw it and didn’t think it need even a 50m penalty.

But my friends from Ultima decided to start nip-picking and get our player a week off.

As a goal umpire when they need me, I do not want to get involved in this crap unless it is completely behind the play.

As a goal umpire on the day, you have to review what both sides do, not just the opposition.

That is why I have never got involved in this after-the-game crap unless it is a coward’s punch or something.

I would encourage Ultima to review the six-minute mark of the third quarter when their number six gave our number 30 a clenched fist to the back of his head after he took a mark.

This incident was on the blind side for the central umpires but in clear view of the goal umpire. It may have been a love tap, but that is why one of our players was out for a week.

A love tap from our player that didn’t seem bad enough for a 50m penalty.

What happens on the field, stays on the field unless it is behind play.

As a goal umpire, I see things that the central umpire cannot. So does the opposition’s goal umpire.

Sculpture competition

THE art gallery’s biannual sculpture competition is done and dusted and the Oswin kids scooped the pool.

Young Edward took out the big sculpture section with his big yabby.

His sister, Olive, took out the small sculpture section with her sculpture of the things we keep.

I will have to lift my game and try and beat you in two years.

Start to collect things for your sculptures now as two years comes around pretty quick.

Olive’s sculpture was sold and Edward’s big yabby was donated to the gallery as I think they have a spot for it in their yard.

Well done to all involved.

There are still some of this year’s entries for sale at the gallery. Call in for a cuppa and cake and have a look.

Battery drive

WINTER is when batteries die. Our Moulamein Men’s Shed can turn these dead batteries into fish for our district rivers.

If you have a heap of them, pick-up can be arranged.

Preferably on a pallet for easy unloading, but they can be picked up by hand or dropped off in font of the men’s shed in town.

For more information, get in touch with Noel Sutton on 0447 541 200.

They have been trying to turn lead into gold for centuries. This is close … turning lead into fish.

River levels

THE Edward River has continued to rise and is now at over 2.6 metres and over 3000 megalitres pr day.

Our Edward will keep rising as there is over 6000 ML at Deniliquin. There is also over 800 ML still coming down the Billabong.

There are over 35,000 ML at Yarrawonga and still rising as they try to keep a bit of air space in the weirs.

Dartmouth is at 97.1 per cent and Hume is at 96.6 per cent. Not much room for a big rain event.

I was talking to an old mate down the street this morning. His advice was not to push any levee banks down yet as we are in for another flood. Only time will tell.
