Races on tomorrow

IT looks like the chance of rain tomorrow has eased, so our Moulamein races will be able to go ahead, after a three-year break due to COVID for two years and then record floods last year.

Get your tickets, book your bus ride and we will see you at the Moulamein races for a bloody good time.

This great event has been going since 1878.

Even with two world wars, we had never missed out three years in a row. See you out there. Be sure you buy a raffle ticket at the gate. The best odds you will get all day.

A Grade bowlers

WELL done to Kerryn and Mark Evans for taking out the A Grade women’s and men’s singles last Friday night.

I doubt if we have ever had a husband and wife take out the club singles in the same year. Well done to you both.

It was moved and seconded at our bowls committee AGM that the two champions of our mighty little club have to play off in a singles match.

We did not know at the time it would be husband and wife. Good luck with that game, Mark.

Even if you win, you lose. We do not know yet when this great match will happen, but I am sure you will get a big crowd to watch it.

Cod season opens

THERE was a good crowd camping on our rivers and creeks for the cod opening weekend, all having a good time and spending money in our little town.

There were mixed results on the Edward River but most people I spoke to got a bit of fun as well as a feed.

One mob of six managed 58 cod, one bream and 10 carp in 2.5 days. In total, 24 of those cod were keepers but they all went back.

You can tell I was not in that camp. Another couple of blokes managed 15 cod and three carp – four of those cod were keepers. Two each for the freezer … not bad for a weekend.

Most of those put back were between 48 and 52cm so they are almost keepers. All caught with chicken bait.

The best fishing he has had for a decade or more, one said.

I had nine mates camped on my place on the Billabong Creek. One of the best cod creeks in our great nation.

They managed three carp and 20 yabbies for the weekend. But they are from Ballarat, so they loved our weather up here and had a great time.

I have another lot of mates that are keen fishermen coming up this weekend for the races. We will see how they go in the Bong.

All of our local fish did not die in the floods, only some of them. I have not heard of any reports in the Edward River downstream of Moulamein where the fish kills did happen after the Billabong Creek poisoned the water.

I will find out more this week. If you are planning a fishing weekend, go upstream of Moulamein at the moment. Almost guaranteed a cod to eat or photograph.

Pigeon

THERE is a bit of excitement in our Moulamein Bowling Club at the moment.

Evidently, there is a pigeon race that pays $80,000 prize money to the winner. One of our bowlers happens to be a racing pigeon breeder.

I think there are about six in the Moulamein bowlers syndicate, each with a pigeon that will have a chance at sharing the money.

That is over $13,000 each. It only takes one to get home first and they all win.

At the moment, these racing pigeons are still in their eggs, but very soon they will be getting trained up to race the 350km back home from Mount Hope on the other side of Hillston, to the coop they will be living in.

Bowls season

BOTH teams were at Racecourse last week. Both of the opposition teams were at the top of the ladder.

Division 1 went down on three rinks. Division 3 managed three rinks up to knock off the top side.

This week, because of the Moulamein races, Murray Downs have agreed to play Friday evening.

Both teams on the bus again and we have a driver.

River levels

THE Edward River has had a small rise and is sitting at around 2400 megalitres a day and around 2.2 metres. This must have been enough to liven up a few cod as there have been plenty caught.
