MOULAMEIN’S races went well.
The rain left us alone. It was nice and cloudy so the day was not too hot.
There was plenty of food as well as plenty of refreshments. The children were looked after with the face painting and other activities.
Our local RFS Fire and Rescue had the gate under control.
What could possibly go wrong? Quite a bit, we found out.
Telstra is as slow as a wet week at the moment so we had trouble downloading some electronic tickets.
Then the power went out, so no water means no dunnies. The internet decided to take a bit of time out. No TAB. That’s good for the local bookies.
There were a couple of other problems, but every problem got solved as quickly as it could be. I think.
I was up at the gate at the time of most of the dramas, so I missed it.
Luckily, we are sponsored by electricians and plumbers so everything worked out the best it could.
Thank you for your help fellas. I haven’t heard the official attendance but I can only estimate that there was about 1200 people out there plus children.
And there were plenty of them as it is a great family-friendly race meeting.
Well done to all those involved in organising our Moulamein races. You are a very small band of locals that do a great job.

Free show
SUNDAY night was a great night for skygazing. We had a hell of a show of lightning. Bugger all rain, which is good at this time of the year.
For those of us that were still up or were up just because, there was another great lightning show about 4am.
Had a quick look, thought it was impressive and went back to bed. Been there, seen that and I didn’t have a beer in my hand.
Nowhere as exiting as the lightning earlier in the night when I had a beer in my hand and was not half asleep.
If you have ever seen the movie The Day of the Triffids, you would never watch a free lightning show again.
Turbo chooks
I HAD 2000 to 3000 turbo chooks gathering on my creek about 3km from our rice.
We had another 500 to 1000 playing in the water at Cemetery Lake. This lake only fills in floods. So, it has been about 50 years between fills.
We also had our neighbours’ flood lake about 500 metres from our rice. There was well over a thousand turbo chooks there starting to wander into our rice crop.
Still plenty of ducks
THEY just never seem to be getting any less, or seem to go to someone else’s property. We had a hell of a shoot on my place this week.
We have bugger all water on our rice due to our spaying program.
But there are still plenty of ducks coming in. This week will see plenty of water back on our rice after a few hot days. The rice is growing well and all the bays will be full again.
Bowls season
BOTH teams were at Murray Downs last Friday night. Thank you to Murray Downs for playing a day early because of the Moulamein races.
They gave us a barbecue dinner before the game so we did not go hungry.
Division 1 had two rinks down and a draw on the last bowl of the night. Division 3 had two rinks down, one rink up, down overall.
This week, both teams are away again. Division 1 over to our mates from Nyah. Division 3 back to Racecourse to play a different team than two weeks ago. Both divisions are starting early so we can get back to our club for our Christmas break-up. So, the bus and the cars will be leaving early.
We need numbers for catering. I think it is about $12 a head for nibbles off our club chief Andrew. Please RSVP to Kerryn on 0407 800 111 before the weekend so we have an idea of numbers.
Bowls tournament
WE have our annual 2x4x2 pairs completion on January 6.
There will be great cash prizes on the day. You will be also well fed.
River levels
THE Edward River has finally started to drop.
We are down to about 2200 megalitres a day and just over 2.1 metres.
The Edward will continue to drop until it rains. Still no cod or yellers caught in the Billabong, just carp. I had my mate Steady up from Melbourne this weekend.
