Principal leaving
WE lose Moulamein Public School principal Jennie Wilson and her husband, Bret, this year.
Jennie has done a great job and her offsider has done a great job keeping our school looking neat and tidy as well as helping out whenever he can with the daily activities.
You two will be missed in our little town but we wish you all the best at your new location.
Work starts on lake
MURRAY River Council and local contractors have started work at Moulamein Lake.
There will be a second barbecue, disabled access to all shelters, all shelters will be cemented, solar lights around the lake as well as seats for those who like to sit down and take in the scenery and the wildlife.
Thank you again to the council for getting this grant to upgrade the town lake.
Lake fees due
I FEEL like a bit of a Christmas grinch but the locks will be changed at Moulamein Lake this week.
It will cost you $150 for a summer membership or $30 per day.
The new keys can be paid for at Moulamein Lakeside Caravan Park or Moulamein Newsagency.
We are a voluntary organisation that helps cover the cost of the water to keep our lake full and the power to pump the water.
With the council upgrading our great asset, this will be the place to be this summer.
Moulamein calendar
THE art gallery has put together a 2024 calendar of some of the best photos around our great little town.
There are some great photos in there and it will only cost you $30. I think there is only about 100 being printed. Get in early or miss out.
For more information and to order, call Jill on 0437 192 648.
One pest replaces others
AFTER getting a flogging of ducks and turbo chooks this rice season, they are mostly gone.
Weekend before last, I had around 10,000 ducks on one of our lakes. That is where they sit all day and come into the rice for a feed at night.
There would have been less than a thousand last weekend. My shooters got a feed but nothing like it has been.
I have even been ringing neighbours to see if they need a few for shooters. It will be interesting to see what happens this weekend being the Christmas weekend and bugger all shooters come up.
The ducks may have worked out that Cairns was the place to be and headed off. The ducks and turbo chooks may have left, but the bloody coots have turned up early in some crops in big numbers.
These mongrel coots do not eat rice. But they make a nest in the rice.
Then make another nest and so on until they turn a 12-tonne rice crop into bare water in no time.
My young fella worked out that he is better off going out with a .22 than a shotgun as he can get more. Not as much fun, but more effective.
Bowls season
THAT was our last Pennant game for this year.
Division 1 cemented their spot in the four with a win over Nyah.
Division 3 were going well up until smoko then it hit the fan. One rink up, two rinks down and down overall.
Thanks again to both teams for starting early so we could get back to our Christmas breakup.
We were well fed by our chief Andrew and his offsiders and everything was going well until the bowls challenge started.
Not old bowls to make more difficult on the green, but we found the very old carpet bowls to use on our greens.
These little buggers bought us all back to the same level. We had a good night and we only have four games next year before the finals start.
Bowls tournament
WE have our annual 2x4x2 pairs completion coming up on January 6.
There will be great cash prizes up for grabs on the day.
You will be also well fed by chief Andrew.
River levels
THE Edward River has continued to drop. We are down to about 1600 megalitres a day and just over 1.6 metres.
The Edward will continue to drop but there may be a bit of a flush arriving at about Christmas.
I still have not heard of a native fish getting caught in the Billabong yet and I have not got many good reports downstream from Moulamein.
Upstream there are still cod getting caught, some too big to be landed.
I will know more after Christmas. All the best for Christmas and the new year. Lets hope we are all back for another round.
