Dogs on snake alert

Watch your dogs

MY young feller lost his dog last Monday to a snake bite in town.

The dog hadn’t left the yard that day. Friday lunch time, four of my dogs decided to play with a five-and-a-half foot brown snake on the back lawn.

Swallowed my lunch quickly and headed off to Swan Hill to get them checked.

I figured the old retired bitch was too busy chewing on her bone that I just gave her to be playing with snakes so she missed the trip.

A quick blood test and only one had been bitten. Treatment was started and successful so far. Just have to keep her quiet for a fortnight. Not easy with a kelpie.

I haven’t seen this many snakes around since the 1970s and with another wet year to breed the frogs, they will still be breeding more little snakes and not eating them.

Frogs have to be better food than your young.

Pigeon races

AN update on our local pigeon racers that are entered in the Meadow One Loft Race.

All of the pigeons are now in the loft – 1600 of them all up, I am told.

The loft is about the length of our bowling greens. This could be an omen for Moulamein bowlers’ entries.

I have got hold of the names of the local entries that are aiming at the $100,000 first prize pool. The name that worries me is Express Post.

This bird is owned by a few Australia Post workers. With a name like that, it will be two or three weeks late or be delivered but never turn up.

I think Spock has died, but it is still early enough to replace Spock. I do not know if it is Spock 2 or they are just sticking with the original name, but our Moulamein bowlers still have six pigeons in their syndicate.

Fire permits available

JUST another reminder that you can still burn off.

I think this is a great rule change and it brings the whole of NSW into line.

Be sure to get your permit, notify the white shirts and register your burn on the app and tell your district captain you are going to light up.

It is now an easy system to follow, even I can do it.

Bowls season

DIVISION 3 was at home to our mates from Murray Downs. It was close all day and we were even, going into the last end of the day.

We managed to get three on that end so it was one rink up, two rinks down but up by three overall.

Unfortunately, not enough to get us into the finals but to beat another team above us is great.

This shows that next year, we will be up there.

Division 1 had to travel to Murray Downs to take on the top team on their own turf. A big ask any game of the year but at the pointy end.

Murray Downs would have been out to prove their strength. David versus Goliath.

It turned out that David still had a few rocks in his sling shot, if I remember my scripture teachings right.

Two rinks up, one rink down. Up by four overall. This gives our Division 1 team a great deal of confidence going into the finals knowing they can match it with the best.

We play at Swan Hill on Saturday against Lake Boga at 1.30pm.

If you are over that way, call in and have a look.

The game will go for over four hours so there is plenty of time to come in and cheer our Division 1 side on and have a beer.

River levels

THE Edward River is still dropping, at around 1m and 670ML a day.

The Billabong has bugger all coming down to help our river levels out. It has virtually stopped.

Not much will change with the levels, maybe just a bit lower. Check your boats. We do not want them to get grounded.

The mud flats are now out so check your stock as well as they can get stuck in the mud banks.
