Fishing comp is reel fun

Moulamein Notes

THE Moulamein Football Netball Club is holding their annual fishing competition on the Victorian Labour Day weekend (March 9 and 10).

The Edward River is a bit low at the moment, but look on the bright side, there is less water between the fish so you have a better chance of catching something.

My mates, the Croweaters, must have enough coming down the Darling to keep them happy, so our local rivers will only deliver what is needed.

We need those below Moulamein on our Edward to put in a big order for water for early March.

Bowls season

WHAT a year it has been in bowls this year.

Our Division 3 almost got into the four, now our mighty Division 1 has got into the preliminary final this weekend.

They managed to get over our mates from Lake Boga with two rinks drawn and one rink up by five. Up by five overall and into the next round.

We play our mates from Racecourse at Racecourse this week.

The winner goes on to play Murray Downs at Murray Downs next week.

A tough ask for our Division 1 side but I am sure they are up to it.

Thank you to Swan Hill Club for hosting last week’s event. The smoko you served up tasted better than ever.

There must have been a reason for that, I am sure. Well done ladies, you are the backbone of the club behind the sense.

Coots still coming

I HAD a mate that came out to watch when we got the big guns in on the coots.

“We only have one hundred or two in some of the weaker rice,” he said.

I replied: “We just might leave them alone.”

“We tried that and ended up with one or two thousand.”

Yep. He has now hit the panic button as the numbers keep building.

There are some farmers about to walk away from rice because of these mongrel bloody coots.

They just keep coming like the Terminator. They cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be bargained with. They cannot be scared away.

There is just no stopping them. They just keep coming until your 12-tonne crop is bare water.

We don’t know where they come from or where they go to after they destroy our crops. But everyone is definitely over them.

Easter bowls tournament

JUST an early plug for the 2024 Easter bowls tournament.

We have changed the format just a little bit this year.

The William Houghton Memorial on Good Friday is a 2-4-2 pairs any combination, starting at noon and you get smoko.

On Saturday, we have the Don Mertz Memorial 3 Bowls Pairs any combination.

This rearranged event will start at 9.30am. You will get lunch and smoko.

Depending on numbers, there could be as much as $1800 in prize money up for grabs over the weekend.

Friday night there will be live music, the Easter bunny, an Easter egg hunt and seafood prizes available in our raffle.

If things go according to plan, there will also be live music on Saturday night.

For more information and to book, call Kerryn on 0407 800 111.

River levels

THE Edward River has had a small rise at just over 1m and 723ML a day.

The Billabong has pumped an extra 50ML into the system. Fish are quiet. Not so at the Hay fishing competition, I have heard.

Hundreds of legal cod were weighed in, I have heard. If this is right, it is great news for our native fish populations.
