Timely river rise

Moulamein Notes

I DO not know if this was done on purpose or if the demand for water at this time of the year has increased the flow past Moulamein.

Whatever the reason, thank you, NSW Water, for doing it.

You may have to stand behind a tree to bait your hook up, the fish will be that excited about the big rise.

There was one silver bream and two yellers caught in the Billabong this week.

They are the first native fish caught on my place that I know of since the floods gave us a fish kill over 12 months ago. This is a great sign.

The Edward River has risen that quickly, it has made the Billabong flow backward.

The old poachers in town would not know which way to point their drum nets.

The Moulamein Angling Club may have to move their duck race to the Edward or their ducks may get sucked up into my pumps.

The Edward has risen to 1.5m and around 1300 megalitres a day.

There is still over 1500ML coming over Stevens Weir, so our river should stay up for a while.

Easter exhibition at the gallery

IF you are into art, the gallery girls have an exhibition by artist Graham Hearn.

There is “amazing sunsets, big skies and far horizons”, I am assured.

They invite everyone to pop in on Easter Saturday for a coffee and cake to have a look.

Library open again

RICKY is very excited to have her beloved library open again after a slight roof collapse.

Luckily, none of her clients were in there at the time. Just made a hell of a mess and got fixed pretty quickly.

But to get the books back in order and cleaned up took a bit longer. Even with the help of her devoted clients, this took longer than Ricky would have liked.

The good news is that the Moulamein library is open again for business.

Easter yabby races

THIS is always a big event for our town as well as the Moulamein Preschool.

This great event will be happening at Moulamein Heritage Village this year.

It will have all of the usual stalls and attractions and will be followed up by our Moulamein Angling Club’s duck race at 2pm in the Billabong Creek.

Cost is $2 for a duck to win a possible $500, $200, $100 for the first three places, as well as plenty of random draws.

And do not worry, if your duck comes last, you get a prize from Aspire Jewellery.

Then on Sunday our Moulamein Angling Club will be holding its annual Easter Sunday fishing comp. This will run from 10am until 3pm.

There is a senior section, junior section as well as a sub-junior section.

It’s $10 for adults and $5 for children to enter and you get a barbecue lunch cooked by Brendon for that.

Drinks are available, as well as plenty of fun and raffles.

Rice harvest has ramped up

THE early birds were knocking on Hooker’s door and rice harvest officially started with a whimper last week.

This week it is firing up. Normally we are almost full by Anzac Day so there is going to be a lot happening in the next four weeks.

I took a couple of hand samples this week. 19.5 per cent moisture in the average rice with a bit of coot damage. 22.2 per cent and a lot less grain where the coots really got stuck into it.

I asked our contractor how his rice front will handle the tangled mess that coots have left behind.

“Do not know, will get the other front if we have to,” was his reply. Rice can be delivered up to 22 per cent most times. Up to 24 per cent if they want to get more rice in the sheds in wet weather.

You can usually add about 1 per cent to the hand samples that I have taken. So, we are almost there for the first paddock. Get that shed three going, Hooker. We will need it.

Easter bowls tournament

JUST another plug for our 2024 Easter bowls tournament. We have changed the format just a little bit this year.

The William Houghton Memorial on Good Friday is a 2-4-2 Pairs any combination starting at noon and you get smoko.

On Saturday, we have the Don Mertz Memorial 3 Bowls Pairs any combination. This rearranged event will start at 9.30am. You will get lunch and smoko in this event.

Depending on numbers, there could be as much as $1800 in prize money up for grabs over the weekend. Friday night there will be live music, Easter bunny, Easter egg hunt and seafood prizes available in our Friday night meat raffle.

If things go according to plan, there will also be live music on Saturday night.

For more information and to book in, call Kerryn on 0407 800 111 for the bowls or our bowling club on 5887 5207 for any other information.
