Dry start to new season

Rain forecast

IT may not be much, but there are a few millimetres forecast for the end of the week.

“It hasn’t rained since it stopped” is the old saying.

Winter crop sowing has started and, going by the dust when I went past one farmer sowing the other day, a few have decided to sow dry.

Even those who pre-watered early would have trouble finding moisture.

This is not climate change.

This is just what happens sometimes – too often when I was broke and starting out as a farmer.

Rice harvest to finish

UNLESS there are breakdowns there are only a couple of farmers still harvesting into the Moulamein sheds.

With perfect harvesting conditions and only an average sowing due to the water prices early on, perfect harvesting conditions means no rain.

We have only had about 20mm since the rain stopped in January.

This would have to be a record for an early finish so all Hooker has to do is tuck all of his rice in to make sure the moisture is okay, then start to ship it out.

Thank you to all those who worked in our sheds this year.

See you next year if it ever rains.

Vandal attack

WE do not get much of this in our great little town that deserves a mention, but it looks like someone took a slingshot to our library and gallery windows.

The gallery is a voluntary organisation and our library supplies a great service to our town with Ricky in charge. Idle hands are the Devil’s playground, fellers.

Get a job and leave our town alone.

Gallery exhibition

THE Graham Hearn exhibition will be happening until the of May in our Moulamein Gallery.

The opening night was a free night with a grazing platter was provided to the many who turned up.

Graham is an artist from Cobargo, NSW, but has close ties to the area through his family in Caldwell.

Graham has had some work on display at our Moulamein Gallery.

Now you can see what he really can do.

At home to Murrabit

THE local football and netball season has started with a whimper for the mighty Swans.

Be sure to come over on Saturday to cheer our teams on and get a feed out of the best canteen in our league.

Plates stolen

A LOCAL ute has had its number plates stolen.

After a quick ring-around to a few mates just to make sure it was not a practical joke, he even rang me.

As if I would ever do something that stupid to a mate.

Innocent this time.

Better report it to the coppers before you get booked somewhere, I told him.

He would have a good defence.

They were pinched off a Muso.

I do not think it would go that fast.

River levels

THE Edward River is steady now at just over 1.1m and around 800ML a day.

Looks like we might get a bit of a rise next week as there is over 1500ML below Stevens Weir.

Still nothing getting caught in the Billabong other than carp but there have been a few good fish caught in our Edward.

A bit hot and cold though: biting one day, nothing the next.

I have heard of a good cod getting taken upstream of Moulamein.

This rise should fire a few fish up so they will bite.
