Iconic race bar scratched

Legendary bar gone

EVERY good thing must come to an end. Unfortunately. That is what has happened to the iconic bar at our Moulamein Race Track. It has been patched up for years but I think the insurance mob must have said no more. It has to go because of OH&S. Those that have been to our race meetings would have to agree that the bar was one of a kind, with a character of its own and it is a shame to lose it. But life goes on and I’m sure we will get used to the new one.

The big race

THE Moulamein Bowling Club pigeons have had their big race. Of the six starters only three made it through to the big event. The other three decided that they would rather fly around pooping on statues than stay in the racing game. I know that none of the MBC pigeons were in the first three. The race was 550km and with a head wind. The birds were released at 7.30am. Will know the final results next week. I think the first 50 birds home get a payout. The winner gets 120 grand.

Wakool Landholders Association AGM

THIS will be held at our Moulamein Bowling Club next Tuesday, October 15, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. This organisation represents local irrigation farmers and they are hoping to pick up a few new younger members. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Moulamein Show And Shine

JUST another reminder that this great event will be happening on our Peter Jackson Footy Oval in Moulamein this Saturday.

There will also be a Race Car Simulator so you can experience the thrill of racing, a well bolted down jumping castle for the kids, as well as a car boot sale. That thing you have always needed could be in one of those boots.

There is catering on site so there will be plenty of good food there. We will have live music in the evening for everyone to enjoy. There will be camping facilities available so you might as well make a weekend of it. This promises to be a great family day out.

This day starts Saturday, October 12, at 8am, and will still be going well into the night. Bring your pride and joy over and show it off. There will be plenty of people there that would really appreciate it.

Rice water flowing

IT is a bit hard to get keen on the rice at the moment with the weather being so cold. I thought I had overcut and would have plenty of firewood for this year. Nope, we always seem to need more. There will be rice getting dropped into the water very shortly. Let’s hope it does not bounce off the ice that may form for early morning sowings.

Pennant bowls starts this week

WE have had a few at training but we are short of Division 1 bowlers for the first round. If you would like a game in Division 2-3 please come to training and tell our selectors you can play. Or you will be getting a phone call to help out if we need a couple more players. Please check the championship board and keep your games up to date.

Fire permits back on

EVEN though the weather is still cold, as of October 1, the fire season has started and you need a permit to burn. This means no burning off without a permit. No burning of solid fuel which means wood piles. Rural properties may burn garden clippings after dark. But we are talking piles the size of a ute. Not the size of a house. Please get in touch with your permit officer for more details. Town properties may only have a fire at any time of the year for heating, cooking or fire training for your local brigade. We are only one hot week away from all of the grass to be dead enough to burn. Be careful out there.

River levels

Our Edward has continued to rise and is now more than 2,050 megs a day and more than two metres. There is still plenty of water below Stevens Weir so we will have these levels for a while yet. The fish are still biting in numbers around Moulamein. With the weather being so good it could be a great time to load your boat up and spend a day on our local rivers. Just remember, it is closed cod season and if you are fortunate enough to catch a catfish. They are protected and must be returned to the water ASAP. Shrimp and worms seem to be the favoured bait last week. This week it could be anything.
