Snakes swell and on the move

They are everywhere. They are big and fat and shiny and plentiful. I keep saying that it is the most snakes I have seen since the ’70s.

I had a camper turn up today and I warned him about the number of snakes and to watch his dog.

I said that I expect to lose at least one dog or more this season to snake bite. Not five minutes later the boss rings up and tells me that two of my dogs have ripped a brown snake in half back at the house.

Public holiday in Victoria so its off to Deniliquin. Dropped them off and they said they look OK. Come back in 90 minutes. Lucky it was Melbourne Cup Day.

Found a quiet corner of a bar. Put a bet on something to pay the vet bill and had a yarn to a couple of fellers I knew.

So, this is what you are supposed to do while the Cup is running, I thought. The dogs ended up fine but I think the horse that I backed must have been bitten by something before the race.

Lucky the grandkids left about 15 minutes before the snake turned up. It was only a little feller about three feet long.

So, it was about the same size as their toy snakes. Could have been interesting. Keep an eye on your kids and your dogs.

Ducks thinned out

The multitudes of ducks that have been here since the start of our rice growing season seemed to have eased off. But with half of Melbourne up here shooting last weekend they would have been looking for somewhere quieter.

We all know that they will be back. Let’s just hope they do not bring too many friends back with them now that Melbourne has gone back to work.

Aerial about to go up

We are about to get a new Emergency Services aerial just north of Moulamein.

The ground crew have been working out there for about the last month putting in all of the footings to hold this monstrous thing into pace.

The fellas that put this very tall thing up will arrive next week. I think the old one that is out there is around 90 metres high.

The new one will be around 130 metres. There will be a 200-tonne crane turn up out there shortly to somehow lift this thing into place.

Keep an eye out. It could be worth a look. This will be the tallest thing in the district until the wind towers go up.

All I can say is. If they want the light bulb changed that is on top of the tower. Do not call me.

Gallery AGM

Our gallery girls will be having their AGM at the Moulamein Bowling Club at 6pm, Friday, November 15.

If you ever wanted to join this great mob, come along. You will be made most welcome.

Then you can stay for a feed and the meat raffles and maybe pick up $500 to take home.

Pennant bowls

Our Divi 1 side has still not been defeated. They ended up two rinks up and one rink down. Up overall.

Our Divi 2-3 were down at smoko. We needed the dreaded cream cakes to trip Lake Boga over and give us a boost. They did that for a while and we caught up. But the power of the cream cakes can only affect the teams so much. Two rinks down, one rink drawn. Only just down on the day.

Both teams are away this week. Divi 1 to Murry Downs and Divi 2-3 to Racecourse. This means both teams on the bus. This is always a good trip. The bowls game is a bonus.

River level

Our Edward has just started to drop and is now around 2.2 metres and just over 2300 megs a day. Yellers are on the bite as well as plenty of big carp.

There are also a few good cod getting landed that do not realise that it is closed season. Three more weeks and they are back on the menu.
