Manang, the yabbies are coming

WE had a very difficult situation in our bowls last Saturday.

We were supposed to head to Manangatang for our Division 2-3 bowls.

We had a church service that morning for one of our bowling mates that we lost. Manangatang volunteered to give up their home game to help us out. Then the heat rule came into the game. They would have trouble getting here by 9am because of harvest commitments and distance travelled, so we agreed to start after Bob’s service.

Thank you again Manangatang, we are even further in debt to you.

The first debt is the Esky full of yabbies that I still owe them from many years ago because they beat a team to get us into the finals.

I did try and get that Esky full. Didn’t work.

But I did get a yabby sandwich for lunch today. Back to the bowls.

Swan Hill came out firing in Division 1. But even with the help of the cream cakes they could not head them. One rink up, two down. Down overall.

Division 3 had a hell of a battle all day with one of our bowlers going down from the heat.

A quick sub and we got to finish the game.

Harro would like to thank all those that looked after him. Two rinks up, one rink down. Just up overall.

Thank you again to Manangatang. You will get that Esky full of yabbies.

Truck fire

OUR Moulamein Fire Brigade got a call for a truck fire out at Mallan about 9.30pm on Friday night before last.

It is not really easy to find a sober fireman at that time on a Friday night.

We found a couple to head out there. Not me.

I was on duty at our bowling club. I made a few very quick phone calls. Luckily, the farmer involved had a fire cart on hand like all responsible farmers do during harvest and had it out very quickly.

From the front window of our club, I saw the red and the blue lights heading out on the road. Another quick phone call to tell them that they would be stood down.

Could have been worse. No one was driving the truck at the time. The header was just harvesting into it. It just decided to catch on fire because it could.

I said to the owner, good thing you hadn’t knocked off for the night and parked all the gear together like we do. Not worth thinking about, he said.

Car fire

OUR Mallan mob are copping it. Right in the middle of harvest, someone decides to light a car up on the Melness Reserve which of cause got into the bush land.

Aerial going up

IF everything goes to plan, the new emergency services aerial will be getting stood up today.

I saw the 220,000kg crane that is going to do the job last week in Swan Hill, they had been out fixing up the Tooleybuc bridge. I should have asked for a quote to get rid of the old Moulamein Bridge at Swan Hill so they have to build a new one before I die.

NSW Open

WELL done to the Murray Downs Golf Club for getting this great event. This will put their great golf course on the must-play bucket list for all golfers in our great country and from overseas.

I decided to have a look at the last day. Followed the best around. I was a bit pissed off because I couldn’t see where the ball landed after they hit it. I was ready to book in for new glasses.

No worries, I thought. I will go ahead and watch the ball land. Found our spot way down the fairway. They hit the ball. The crowd started to walk our way. Still couldn’t see the ball.

They were driving the ball well over 300 metres and still in the middle of the fairway. At least I do not have to buy new glasses.

Well done again to the Murray Downs Golf Club. You have put yourselves on the map big time. The only down side of the day was getting across our Moulamein Bridge at Swan Hill.

Races coming up

WE all should know that our Moulamein races are running again on December 14. This is always a big weekend for our little town. Spread the word. Let’s make this a big one.

River levels

OUR Edward has just started to rise at about 2400 megs a day and just over 2.2 metres.

The Mighty Billabong has started to flow and will have a good flow for cod opening. Carp are the go in the Billabong recently but the natives might wake up with this extra flow.

Our Edward has started to fish quite well with a few cod that do not know that it is still closed season plus a few good yellers and plenty of carp.

Cod season opens Sunday. Make sure you do the right thing as the fisheries are bound to be around keeping us all honest.
