Moulamein scoops the pools

THIS could be one of the biggest Australia Day breakfasts in years in our little town with Alan Fielding taking out the Citizen of the Year for the tireless work he does.

From our Moulamein Fire and Rescue Unit, our Men’s Shed, bowling club bus driver and board member, as well as driving our community bus to get the elderly to doctors and shopping trips, Alan wears a lot of hats.

In his spare time he makes wooden toys and our P&C Association gets 100 per cent of the sales income.

There is probably much more Alan does but you can hear about that on Sunday.

Heath Moloney took out the Sportsperson of the Year.

Heath won the best and fairest in the seniors with the Moulamein Football Netball Club this year as well as in the mighty magoos.

Yep. Heath played two games every week for our club. He also did very well in the league votes. You can hear more of that on Sunday, as well.

The Moulamein Auto Club took out the Community Group of the Year.

Their show and shine weekend is getting bigger every year and they do a great job keeping those old what used to be bucket of bolts going that are now classics.

The Moulamein Fire and Rescue will be doing breakfast and running the show. I know Mayor John Harvie will be there to present the awards.

Our little town took out three of the seven Murray River Council’s Australia Day awards up for grabs. We are definitely batting above our weight.

I think the morning kicks off at 8am for a very delicious breakfast. We have ordered extra, so you will not go hungry.

We bought an egg

THE Moulamein bowlers are back into pigeon racing. Last year there were six in the bowlers syndicate. This year there are 12 that are trying to get a share in the $200,000 prizemoney being offered.

There are a few different names this year and I will get them too you as soon as I can. I own a third of a pigeon with a couple of mates.

Unfortunately for them, I picked the name of our pigeon before they became shareholders. Their turn next year.

Because of all of the crap my Bombers went though a few years ago, I called our pigeon Needles. I should have called it COVID as that is the only thing we tested positive to.

The bad news is that Needles got sick and had to be put down. Let’s hope they didn’t have to do that with a needle. That would have been a bit ironic.

The good news is that Needles I went before the shut-off date, so we can get Needles II into the loft. They will be starting their trial races very soon, so let’s hope Needles II can find his way home.

Men’s health night

WE are having an educational men’s health night at our Moulamein Bowling Club on Saturday, February 15, to point out the bleeding obvious to our men in our district that they have to start looking after themselves.

We are not getting any younger fellers. It will be a bit like the old sportsman’s night, with big names like AFL legends Brian Taylor and Matthew Richardson, as well as other speakers.

Even though it is about men’s mental and physical health, women are encouraged and welcome to attend. Who is going to remind the silly old bugger of what he has been told if it is not his wife, partner or daughter?

This promises to be an entertaining as well as a great information night. All this for only $10, with entry fee getting donated to the Movember charity. There will be a bus running from Barham for a small charge.

If we can get a bit more funding, we may be able to organise a bus from other towns. More information in the coming weeks or ring Courtney on 0429 646 942.

Bowls back

WE were back on the greens again this week. Divi 1 travelled over to Nyah and got two rinks up, one down. Up overall. Divi 2 went over to Racecourse and unfortunately ended up three rinks down.

This week Divi 1 head over to Swan Hill. Divi 2 are at home to the other Racecourse side. Good luck this week.

We had a very special presentation to make at Nyah last week. We were short of players one week last year. Two of our mates from Lake Boga filled in to help us out. Jean and her grandson Ely joined our team for the day.

Jean’s rink was fortunate to pick up an eight on a end. This is the maximum you can get and you get a badge for your achievement. I was fortunate enough to be able to present this badge to Jean on Saturday.

Thank you to all those that fill in when teams are short. It is always much appreciated.

Thanks, but no thanks

OUR Moulamein Op Shop has been inundated with donations. They need a bit of time for the volunteers to catch up. So please no more donations until they catch up.

Our op shop sells bags of rags if you need some grease rags. This helps them get rid of the clothes that they can’t sell. If you are driving past and need a few grease rags. Grab a bag or three too help them out and see what other bargains you can find.

River levels

OUR Edward has steadied at just over 2100 megs a day and around 2.08 metres. Cod are still biting well in our Edward with plenty of keepers getting landed. I know it is a strange way of putting it, but he was doing well on springer size yabbies whatever they are. There are plenty of small yabbies in our river, so I can only guess that springer size yabbies are bigger than that.
