Paddocks green in Moula

Rain at last

I DID everything I could to make it rain.

Started shearing, washed my ute and split a rim on the spraying tractor.

I even said to our shearers that this could be the second shearing in my farming life that I have not had rain going by the forecast.

A couple of millimetres the first week only cost us a day, then the second week a fantastic 50mm in our gauge.

I did not care that it cost us two days shearing. In total, 42mm was the official reading in town and 52mm just the other side of town.

It just depended which cloud you were under.

Our paddocks are going green as I write. Anzac Day rain is always welcome, or any day at this time of the year.

Keep it coming, Huey.

Any farmer that is not smiling at the moment, should not be a farmer.


Rice harvest almost over

THERE are only a couple of farmers still bringing in the last of this year’s harvest.

As far as I can gather, we have received more rice this year because of the fantastic yields.

With a perfect finish to the season, there could be a few records broken in the district.


Water tower painted

MOULAMEIN has joined the art trail.

Our water tower has been painted with three different murals.

I keep forgetting to drive over there to see the finished product.

I would like to thank Murray River Council and whoever else was involved in deciding what we got painted up there.

Thank you to all those involved.

It looks great and you could not have done a better job.


Anzac Day services

I THINK there were about 120 people at our dawn service and about 100 for the other service.

The Moulamein school students did a great job in running this event.

Back in our day, nobody spoke in public.

Our kids of today do a great job of it.

Thank you to all involved.


Football/netball at home this week

THE mighty Swans play Ultima at home this week.

Be sure to get over there to check out the talent on the field as well as our courts.

Moulamein has got a rough start to the season playing last year’s two teams that were in the grand final first up.

But look on the bright side, we play the other three teams at the end of the season.

Moulamein could be the ugly duckling of our league this year.

Rough start, beautiful finish for the run home for the finals. Do not give up on us after the first two games.

We have a tough start. After the game on Saturday, we will be having our players’ auction at Moulamein Bowling Club.

Form a syndicate, come in alone or just turn up. This is always a great night and we need your support.


River levels

THE Edward River has been very steady at around 2000 megaliters per day and about 2 metres.

Unfortunately, this will not last.

Flow below Stevens Weir has dropped from 2000ML per day to 1500ML at the time of writing.

Carp and the odd edible is all that is still getting caught in the billabong.

If you put the time into the Edward, you will be rewarded with a feed.
