Tail of the unexpected

Wakool and Moulamein sheep night

RICK has organised another sheep night so we can keep up with any changes that might be happening.

The nights will be happening on Monday, June 16 at Wakool Services Club and Wednesday, June 18 at Moulamein Bowling Club.

Rick has got the moths out of his wallet again so you will get a feed at both nights.

These nights will be about optimising your breeding for eating quality and market specs.

Another subject to be covered will be selecting the right genetics for resilient sheep in drought conditions.

To book in for catering purposes, call Rick on 0428 372 357 or email rick.ellis@wmlig.org.

King’s Birthday bowls tournament

SATURDAY and Sunday will see our two-day, two bowls triples tournament happening.

Last report there were 20 teams entered. There is room for a couple more.

To enter, call Kerryn on 0407 800 111.

Could all of our bowlers please remember to drop in some smoko. We also need a hand at smoko if you can help.

Give Fay a call to help out on 042 781 929.

Scorpion bite

IT has taken me more than 65 years, but I finally got bitten by a scorpion on Sunday while unloading a bit of wood.

No worries – just done my first aid course with our RFS.

Cold compact is what I could remember so I stuck my finger into a cup of ice water.

The official recommendation is washing the area, cold pack and take some Panadol.

The pain wasn’t bad so I went back up to the workshop to finish a couple of sculptures for this weekend.

Just kept dipping my finger into a cup of ice water occasionally.

The dipping got more frequent as the pain built.

No Panadol in the workshop first aid kit. A quick trip to the shearing shed it was.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take the ice water with me.

While I was at the shed with the pain building, I decided to try that stuff we put on our lambs at mulesing time for pain relief.

For future reference – that does not work on scorpion bites.

Back to the workshop. Finger back in the ice water waiting for the Panadol to kick in.

Eventually, it went feeling like a squashed fingernail to a numbness like the dentist’s pins and needles.

It still feels like that at the time of writing two days later.

If you do get bitten, just remember to have some cold water around, and take a couple of Panadol early before the real pain sets in about an hour after the bite.

Battery drive

IT is that time of the year again where Moulamein Men’s Shed ask you to drop your batteries into their shed.

Or for a big pick up, they will come to you.

You can drop your old battery off at any time on the pallet in front of the shed, or for pick up call Noel on 0447 541 200, Dick on 0428 873 273 or Colin on 0488 042 740.

For big pickups, if the batteries can be on a pallet and loaded onto the trailer with forks, I’m sure our old fellers from the men’s shed would appreciate that.

Sculpture competition

JUST another reminder that our Moulamein galleries bi-annual sculpture competition is happening Saturday.

There is more than $2000 up for grabs.

There are two sections. The large section, which must be able to be carried by two people, and the small section which must have a base no larger than 30cm by 50cm.

The sculptures do not have to be welded but must be free standing. Any recycled material will get you into the competition.

I have got a couple made and a couple more on the go.

Come over Saturday night and have a look.

You may find something that would look fantastic in your backyard, verandah or on a shelf in your house.

Sculptures must be delivered Friday before 3pm.

River levels

THE Edward River seems to have peaked at around 1.66 metres and just under 1500 megalitres per day.

Let’s hope the Edward is still at a good level for the long weekend to keep the fish biting.

The brief rise has arrived, then our Edward will go back down to minimum levels until it rains.
