Rain from nowhere
WE were only expecting a few ml of rain for our long weekend.
Not good for the campers but great for us. It felt like it would snow before it would rain on Sunday.
Saturday night we got 12mls. That’s great, we all thought. Twice as much as we expected. We may even get a ml or two on Sunday night we thought.
Another 12 ml or so depending where you were. For round figures we averaged about an inch in the old language or 25ml. You pissa.
As I have said before. Any farmer that is not smiling after this rain should not be a farmer.
Get out while your place is worth a quid and go and pull wings off butterflies or whatever else you can do to stay miserable.
My gut feeling is that it will stay dry. The worrying part is, every time we get a fantastic rain event, it is never forecast to be that much. Let’s hope I am wrong.
I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
Keep it coming Huey, prove me wrong.
Wakool and Moulamein sheep night
RICK has organised another sheep night so we can keep up with any changes that might be happening.
The nights will be happening at Wakool on Monday June 16 at the Wakool Services Club. And at Moulamein on Wednesday June 18 at the Moulamein Bowling Club. Rick has got the moths out of his wallet again so you will get a feed at both nights.
These nights will be about optimising your breeding for eating quality and market specs.
Another subject to be covered will be selecting the right genetics for resilient sheep in drought conditions.
To book in for catering purposes. Please ring Rick on 0428372357 or go to rick.ellis@wmlig.org .
This night is proudly presented by Central Murray BestWool BestLamb in a joint venture with Western Murray Land Improvement Group.
Back to football-netball this weekend
AFTER having a weekend off for our King’s Birthday, we play Ultima away this weekend.
Sculpture competition
THERE were nine entries in the large section and 23 in the small section this year. Well done to our Gallery Girls for organising this great event, and a big mention and thank you to all of those that entered in the Sculpture Competition. There is definitely plenty of talent out there, as usual.
There were plenty of potential artists that got inspired on the night and said they would enter something next time — you have two years to get it done.
I have already worked out the one or two that I will enter in the large section in two years’ time.
Unfortunately, it is the same one or two that were supposed to be entered in the last two competitions, but they keep evolving into something better.
Two years will come around quicker than you think. At least get them started and then it is easier to just finish them off.
We all work better under pressure. All of the entries will be on display for the next two weeks. All of the entries are for sale. Some have already been sold.
Our Gallery Girls are open on Thursdays and Fridays for good coffee and great cakes and art as well as local produce between 10am and 4pm both days.
Bowls tournament
OUR King’s Birthday two day triples tournament was a great success. The weather was not kind to us but at least the rain held off until we finished bowling both days.
We were all well fed, watered and entertained for the two days. Our winners went home with $450 each, our runner up team got $250 each and the best performing team each day took home $100 each. Maybe not sheep stations but well worth winning.
Our next tournament will be our September Classic held on the last weekend of August. I could tell you why that happens but it would take too long.
This is a Gold Letter Event. We already have over 10 entries so positions are filling fast.
For more information about our September Classic held on the last weekend of August and to book in, please ring Kerryn on 0407800111 for more information.
River levels
OUR Edward seems to have leveled off at around 1.5 meters and 1,300 megs a day.
The Mighty Billabong is still supplying around 280 megs a day and for some reason there will be a good flow coming down the Billabong for a while longer. The brief rise has finished, now our Edward will go back down to minimum levels until it rains.
