Final siren on GRFNL?

GOLDEN Rivers Football Netball League could be finished after 2025.

This is the recommendation of the Northern Futures Project steering committee.

With Ultima thinking they are too good for us and wanting to leave our league, it is hard to go on with only five clubs.

They were not too good for the Mighty Swans last week. Just saying.

One premiership does not put you above the league.

Nullawil won a few premierships and stepped up to what they thought was a better league. Look where they are now. Do not even exist as a football-netball side by name.

We may have one more year with a minimum of four sides if the footy Gods are smiling down on us or we go to Central Murray.

At least we would get to know each other very well by the end of the season and we would all be in the finals with only four teams.

Last time we changed leagues was back in 1958. We were the Tigers back in the Deniliquin league.

We won the premiership in 1955.

Due to the floods in 1956, the season was cancelled.

We won the premiership again in 1957.

But because the league folded, no flag was ever presented.

This could be the year of the Mighty Swans. But this time we will make sure the flag gets presented.

Big decisions will be made this week, but the future of our club is on the line.

A bit more rain from nowhere

WE were only expecting a few millimetres of rain.

For our long weekend, we scored an inch in the old language.

Saturday night we gained another 4mm that we were not expecting – 4mm on dry ground is bloody useless. But 4mm on wet ground is great.

Looks like a few mm might come next weekend.

Athletics carnival

OUR local students will be running and jumping on the Peter Jackson Oval on June 26-27 from 10am both days.

Our P&C will be doing a barbecue lunch at 1pm on Friday.

We have some very talented children in our school that will be heading onto the next level.

Duck over and have a look.

COVID

IT is still around and it is doing the tour of Moulamein and district at the moment.

The boss picked it up from somewhere. The first time, she got it back in the day when it was new. I slept up the other end of the house.

It could have killed an old fat fella like me, I thought.

I have never tested positive to this bloody thing until now. Bugger. First time for everything.

Get bitten by a scorpion two weeks ago, now this.

Have done two tests because I didn’t believe the first one. Bugger again.

I had a couple of meetings this week. Will test again to see if I can get to them.

Just feels like the wog to me, but I do not want to pass it onto someone it may affect badly.

It’s not hard to isolate on the farm; just may need someone to deliver some beer.

Food is never a problem out here.

Football-netball at home this weekend

WHAT a weekend in football-netball it was last week.

Our senior footballers went out against last year’s premiers and came home with an eight-point win.

Our A Grade netballers also had a win as well as our mighty midgets, our under 14 and F Troop netballers.

This week we are home to Macorna.

Please do your duty at our canteen or get a replacement. If you see them getting a bit busy in there, do not hesitate to ask Judy if she needs a hand.

There is almost a full-time job just restocking the fridges and putting chips into cups.

Many hands make light work. Hope to see you there.

A bridge too far

I SEE our “Moulamein bridge” at Swan Hill was back in the papers again last week.

Senior government officials as well as the mayors and chief executives from six local councils met to push for this new bridge.

The most important crossing that has to be upgraded, they described it as.

I have been saying that for years.

Let’s see if my mates from the Swan Hill anti-bridge mob can come up with an argument against six councils, two State Governments and the Federal Government to try and stop this great project again.

The millions of dollars that were quoted seemed to get to $100 million or so for this project. I may have read that wrong.

I know Victoria will be dragging their heels to put in their share after what my mate, Dan, did to their state.

But at least it is heading in the right direction.

River levels

THE Edward River has started to drop at around 1.4 metres and 1100 megalitres per day.

The Mighty Billabong is still supplying around 270ML a day.

The Mighty Billabong should keep supplying 200ML or so for at least a month.

Unfortunately, the Edward will keep dropping as there is only 650ML at the offtake.

This water has to supply the Edward, Wakool and Niemur rivers as well as anyone that is still irrigating.

Check your boats and your foot valve on your house pumps.

I keep telling people this and forget to check my own tinny. Yep. High and dry. Some people cannot be told.
