Magpies to soar with new numbers

FOOTBALL

BOORT have been missing out on finals footy for a couple of seasons now, but after nearly clinching a spot last season, could their luck finally turn around?

Magpies coach Dale Cameron plans on trying to move up the ladder and stay consistent for all four quarters.

“Yeah, the plan is to go up the ladder,” Cameron said. “We have come a long way.

“We lost four or five close games against decent sides; we missed finals by a game and a half.

“It was a missed opportunity but I’m looking to improve and grow, there is a lot of hunger to be successful.

“We are a bit different as we are a lot younger to other teams, so I think we have a nice balance of youth and experienced players.”

After having a busy off season, bringing in five new quality players to the Magpies, they will be thinking of finals and nothing else.

The first signing was Carlos Eagon from Melbourne who is currently training with the Collingwood VFL team.

He is a speedy and handy midfielder who could be a big asset for Boort.

The Magpies have welcomed the Rutley family who came from Keilor, with Kayne Rutley who featured with the Calder Cannons and brother Tyson Rutley expected to be in the first team.

East Keilor’s big man Peter Barbopoulos will also be coming to Boort Park. He will play a big part in the ruck along with being in the forward line.

The Magpies’ Harry Weaver will bring his brother of Jack Weaver into Boort after a spell with Padthaway.

Dale Cameron has said that the Magpies will be promoting a number of Under 17 players into the senior side.

“Yeah, we will be bringing in six young lads coming up from the 17s,” Cameron said.

“We will include Max Beattie and Lachlan Hall who both featured with the senior side a number of times last season.

“We put in one of our youngest sides last year against Donald. They all clicked together and won by 80-odd points.

“They are all very good players; it will just be a matter of being consistent.”

FROM THE COACH

“The main plan for this season will be consistency.

“We won five games in my first season as coach, and we won seven games last season.

“So, I’m hoping that the lads will push towards 10 wins or even 12 wins if we are lucky.

“All the boys have played together for a couple of years now, so they will all have a bit of a better understanding which could lead to better results.

“During our season launch, we had about 40-odd players there which is good for squad depth.

“We will have some practise matches coming up now so that will be good!”

PLAYER TO WATCH

Carlos Eagon and Lachie Hall:

Carlos Eagon will be a big a great player to watch for us so I’m very excited to see how he goes with us.

But the young Lachie Hall will be a great player for us too I think.

He could’ve played the whole season with the seniors providing that he wasn’t injured.

He had 25 touches with 100% efficiency against Donald and Nullawil, which is now Calder United.

Very excited to see him grow as a player.

NETBALL

BOORT will be looking for premiership glory this season, falling short two years in a row, losing a grand final in 2023 and narrowly missing a grand final spot last year.

Some players from the 2023 team are coming back to the lineup after having a season off.

With Sophie Perryman and Stephie Wilson returning to the team, they will look into getting a premiership in 2025 season.

Georgia Haw said the premiership will be the goal for the Magpies and they are all going to be committed for it.

“Yeah, that’s the goal. The 2025 side will almost be identical to the 2023 grand final side as Sophie Perryman and Stephie Wilson returning,” Haw said.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Carly Isaac: She is going to be the new coach for Boort this season. She was with Boort through the 2023 and 2024 season.

So she is going to be committed as ever to win a grand final this season.
