Roos primed for back-to-back

MAKING history with their first ever premiership last season, the Balranald Roos are looking to again set the benchmark for what should be another compelling season of Central Murray netball in 2023.

It was certainly a close race for last year’s premiership title, with not much to separate the top four teams in Balranald, Swan Hill, Lake Boga and the Mallee Eagles.

The Roos will once again be led by premiership coach and player Jess Parry, and will be keen to keep their winning streak alive with back-to-back flags. However, they will have to be careful in how they manage the pressure of expectations, while also being wary not to become complacent on the court.

It may also be tough for the Roos coming up against longtime A Grade heavyweights in Swan Hill, who will be out for redemption after going into the grand final as favourites.

While both gain new A Grade coaches and have a few player changes this season, the Pies and the Eagles are still expected to be up there among the top performers. This season could also finally see Nyah-Nyah West United make the finals after just narrowly missing out in sixth position last year.

The Cohuna Kangas were also beginning to find their stride in 2022, and will be looking to build that momentum once again this year.

Tooleybuc-Manangatang may struggle to lift themselves into a higher position on the ladder this year, losing nearly half of their 2022 line up without being able to fully replace them in the recruiting process.

One of the dark horses we might see in 2023 could be Kerang. The Blues have recruited heavily during the off season and could emerge as a genuine contender. Tyntynder are another team that have also recruited well, and will be looking to improve their ladder position this season.

So, can the Roos go back-to-back or will the Swans’ vengeance put them in the box seat? Will the Pies and the Eagles still be finals contenders, or could the Demons or the Doggies crack the top five instead?

Only one thing is for certain in 2023 – a new year means it is anyone’s game to win, and nothing is guaranteed. Good luck to all of the clubs, players, coaches and supporters in what is set to be an exciting season of netball ahead.
