Sitting pretty at the top

UNBEATEN ladder leader Swan Hill was again crowned victorious after an electrifying showdown against Nyah Nyah West United on Saturday.

An outstanding second half not withstanding, the team from Nyah was unable to establish a foothold and the final whistle saw eight goals separating them from the high flying Swans.

“Nyah had a really great second half,” Swans coach Madeleine Foott said.

“We were lucky to get away with it.”

In the goal circle Swan shooters Emily Patterson and Bianca Brown played seamlessly, proving difficult for Demons’ defense to penetrate.

Down the other end of the court, the ever-dependable Denise Snyder netted 30 goals, just three shy of Patterson’s 33.

“We had to make sure that we tried to shut their goalers down as much as possible,” Foott said post-match.

“Once they get in the circle they are very accurate.”

Nyah Nyah West United coach Carly-Marie Clark paid credit to Swan Hill’s “composure, and their ability to control the ball well”.

Commenting on her team’s stellar run after the halftime break, Clark said that she was pleased with how the second half had played out, and commended GA Larraine Ralph for stepping up when Snyder was facing difficulty from Swans defence.

Up next on the Demons’ fixture is second-placed Tigers at a Friday night clash under lights at Woorinen on July 3.

By the looks of things, it will be a demanding game.

“Woorinen is going to be a tough challenge,” Clark said.

“They’re really hitting their stride at the moment.”

Next week Swan Hill sees a bye, and coach Foott will be putting her players through their paces at training over the next two weeks prior to a top tier showdown against Woorinen on July 11.

“Obviously they’re a quality side we’re going to have to definitely be on our game,” Foott said.

“We’ll take the opportunity to work on a few things that have come out of yesterday’s game.”

Halfway through the season the Swans are on top by eight points, but Foott remains quietly cautious.

“We’ve got a few tough games coming up,” she said.

“The latter half of the year is always interesting.”
