Dogs record first netball win

TYNTYNDER came away with their first win of the season against Koondrook-Barham, but both sides may have to battle injuries going forward.

The Raiders WD Hayley Reading had to be carried off in the second quarter with a nasty ankle injury, with WA Kristy Nottle swapping into WD and Remy Doyle coming onto the court into WA.

In the final quarter, Tyntynder had their own loss when GD Maddy Gleeson also had to be carried off to be replaced by young gun Zarlie Featherby in the closing moments of the game.

In stifling conditions for the Anzac round, Tyntynder got off to a nice start shooting 14 goals to Koondrook-Barham’s eight in the first quarter.

The Dogs’ GS Sarah Hawley began with nine, and maintained that form to be the top scorer for the match with 21 goals with her co-goalie GA Tess Denham just behind her on 20.

They continued this pattern all day, with both teams only slowing towards the end in the heat.

By half-time, the score was 19 to 25 and then 28 to 36 with a quarter to go.

Each side only scored five in the final quarter on court but Tyntynder’s lead had been cemented.

It was a terrific effort from all players but best on for the Raiders included club newbie Tess Doyle with a big day in C, Lily Den Houting with a very athletic performance for three quarters in GD and then the final in GA, and Chelsea Lowry who was strong in defence all day.

GA Tlarnee Lake was the Raiders top scorer with 18 goals for the match. Sassi-Jo McGrath shot 10 as GS, while in the final quarter Den Houting shot three and Rianna Matuch shot two.

Best on for the Dogs was Hawley for her excellent movement and accuracy in the goal ring, ably assisted by Denham. C Toni Rivett and WD Demi Wall were also superb in the midcourt.

Next week Koondrook Barham will head to Cohuna to play the Kangas in a night game, while Tyntynder’s fourth round game against Swan Hill will be played on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend on June 11.
