Cohuna Kangas’ second half a winner

IN a spirited contest in wet and dreary conditions, Cohuna Kangas were too good for Nyah Nyah West United in a 53-44 win.

Coming off the back of a loss against Swan Hill, the Kangas came out firing, looking like they wanted to redeem themselves from the week before.

The Demons led 26-25 at the half-time break, however the Kangas’ scoring exploded in the third quarter, 16 goals building a lead of seven before cementing their nine-goal victory in the final quarter.

Demons wing defence Shania Decker played a great game, applying a lot of pressure outside the ring to keep the Kangas’ attack line on their toes.

Demons playing coach Laura Anderson said the team worked hard throughout the match despite the loss.

“It was a very physical game in which we had chances to win but simple skill errors let us down,” Anderson said.

The Kangas now sit in fifth position on the Central Murray A Grade ladder, and the Demons eighth.

The Demons will have their work cut out for them this week against Balranald, who will come to the game off the back of a loss.

The Kangas, who played their round 7 match against Woorinen on Good Friday, will be able to have a couple of weeks’ rest before taking on the Mallee Eagles in round 9.

Saints too strong for Raiders

AFTER having a break, Tooleybuc-Manangatang came out blazing on Saturday, beating Koondrook-Barham 59-36.

The first two quarters were fairly close, giving Tooleybuc-Manangatang a six-goal lead, but the Raiders couldn’t keep up, with the scoreline blowing out to 40-27 in the third break.

Saints defenders Laura Zanker and Taylen Blanchford teamed up to play a strong game, intercepting a number of passes and getting up for the rebounds, sending the ball back down the court numerous times throughout the game.

Another standout for the winning side was Zoe Morris, who demonstrated great leadership in the Saints’ goal circle, combining well with wing attack Amy Standen, who fed into the ring with force and accuracy.

Young Tigers gun Zoe Steicke put on a clinic in the goal circle to score 37 of the team’s goals against the Dogs’ tough defensive duo, Nicola Miliano and Maddy Gleeson.

Swans end Roos’ streak

BALRANALD couldn’t keep up their winning streak, going down to Swan Hill 39-43.

While it was pretty much neck-and-neck for the first half of the match, Swan Hill were able to pull away in the third quarter. Despite a strong final quarter from the Roos, Swan Hill were able to maintain their lead and come out with the win.

Swan Hill’s Ingrid Condely and Casey Frame teamed up well in the goal circle, while Karli McIntyre and Mollie Quinn dominated at the other end of the court to keep up their defensive pressure most of the game.

Swan Hill coach Madeline Nalder said she was pleased with her team’s consistent four-quarter effort.
