Mallee Eagles win ‘intense’ contest

IN a super-competitive tussle between Woorinen and the Mallee Eagles, the Tigers have fallen short, going down to the Eagles 59-50.

After three weeks off due to byes, the Tigers knew they would be in for a challenge against the ladder leaders. However, they kept up the energy throughout the game to keep themselves within reach throughout.

“It was a really tight, intense game with a finals feel about it,” Eagles coach Vicki McDonald said.

Tigers wing attack Ava Crow, 14, was a standout for her team against the defensive pressure, setting a high standard with her feeds into the ring and ability to drive down the court. Tigers shooter Zoe Steicke was also among Woorinen’s best, shooting 44 goals.

At the other end of the court, Eagles shooter Kellie Walker put out another stellar performance, shooting with accuracy while rebounding the few misses. Wing defence Tayla Anderson also had a great game, applying defensive pressure through the midcourt and creating lots of turnovers.

Despite the nine-goal loss, Woorinen playing coach Olivia Jones said she could see major improvement in her team compared to the previous match against the Eagles.

“The Tigers are looking forward to the last four rounds and hope to keep the prospect of finals alive,” Jones said.

This week Woorinen will battle Lake Boga in what might be a difficult match for the Tigers to win.

The Eagles are expected to take on Kerang, and likely to be a tough match for the now inexperienced side against the ladder leading Eagles.
