New-look team impresses

WOORINEN proved their new A Grade line-up for 2023 are a force to be reckoned with, beating Cohuna Kangas 54-42 on Good Friday.

The Central Murray netball season opener was a slower paced game than usual, with rainy conditions making the court challenging and forcing both teams to make the most of rare turnover opportunities.

Tigers playing coach Tayla Bennet was pleased with how her new-look team performed on the day.

“It was good to start the season with a win and we feel that we can only get better from here,” Bennett said.

The Kangas were left playing catch-up for the majority of the match, trailing by three goals at the end of the first quarter and five goals by half time.

Their deficit only continued to grow as the weather worsened and the Tigers found momentum, ending with a 12-goal margin.

Danni Sawyer and Keely Wilson did their best to hold their own against a strong Tigers attack in Emily Siely and Tayla Bennett, while Kangas shooting duo Kobie McIvor and Carmen Dye went up against experienced defenders in Tessa Demaria and Stevie-Jo Maher.

“We did well with the momentum swings and played our style of game to come out on top,” Bennett said.

“The girls played with patience and were consistent throughout the game.”

Kangas coach Meg Dye said her team started strong, but the Tigers were the better side on the day.

“Back to the drawing board for us to prepare for the next game,” she said.

The rest of round 1 will played this weekend, with Tooleybuc-Manangatang taking on Kerang, Mallee Eagles playing Lake Boga, Nyah Nyah-West United hosting Koondrook-Barham, and Balranald travelling to Tyntynder.
