Magpies get the best of chilly start

LAKE Boga have launched their 2023 season with a win over the Mallee Eagles in a competitive tussle.

In windy and rainy weather at Lalbert, both teams were forced to slow the pace of the game in an effort to keep control of the ball and avoid early injuries.

The Magpies were able to get an early jump on the Eagles, going into the first break six goals up. But by half-time the Eagles were able to bring that gap back to just three goals.

Eagles playing coach Meg Allen said her side’s improved second half wasn’t enough to be able flip the game.

“Our second quarter meant we dropped a few goals, so although we pegged a few back in the third and fourth, we weren’t able to get back in front,” she said.

“Overall we have lots to take from the game to keep improving across the court in preparation for round 2.”

Lake Boga defenders Sophie Peacock and Jemma Meehan worked together like a well-oiled machine against one of the league’s best shooters, Kellie Walker.

At the other end of the court, Eagles defenders Allen and Sarah Young did their best to try and keep sister shooting duo Kate and Sarah Hepburn at bay.

Sonya Lorenzoni was named best for the Eagles, with her ability to get her hands on the ball in the wet conditions making her an asset.

In round 2 the Eagles travel to to Kerang to take on the Blues in what could be a tight contest, while Lake Boga will host Nyah-Nyah West United.
