A GROUP of the region’s most talented young netballers are set to play in Netball Victoria’s State Titles in Melbourne this weekend.
Representing the Murray region, 20 girls from the Central Murray, Golden Rivers and other local competitions have been selected to play in a 17 & Under and 15 & Under team.
Under-15s coach Melanie Wait told The Guardian the State Titles were a great chance to experience a more competitive level of netball than what players may be used to.
“The girls have been really committed and training really hard – we’ve been working on lots of processes and strategies,” she said.
“It’s a really good chance for them to play with a group of strong netballers and try and learn some new strategy and technique.”
Competing against 18 other regions, the teams will play 12 games on Saturday and then another seven on Sunday to determine the best in the state.
Talent scouts will also be at the event looking for players to trial later in the year for the Netball Victoria Talent Academy.
Wait said it would an “eye-opening” experience for the girls.
“It’s really important to see what good is, and to see the standard that they need to work towards. It helps them get exposure to quality netball,” she said.
“Playing indoors is also a lot faster than outdoors, so getting that experience (helps) too, because if they ever want to go on and play that next level, understanding that is really important.”
Nonie Domaille and Natalie Plant are coaching the under-17s team, while Pyper McGown is the co-ordinator.
