Nineteen-thousand more fish in our rivers

THIS great event happened last Sunday in our Edward River as well as our Billabong Creek.

Our Moulamein Men’s Shed has teamed up with our Moulamein Angling Club as well as our mates from Bendigo and the NSW Fisheries and a few others to get this to happen.

I think there was around $14,000 worth of cod and yellers that went into our Edward River and Billabong Creek last weekend.

Well done to all those involved. There were 13,000 cod and 6000 yellers released at several sites by children, grownups and anyone that wanted to be involved.

Last year’s release may be the reason that there are so many small cod getting landed.

We look forward to next year.

Australia Day in Moulamein

WE will start the day at around 8am for breakfast cooked by our Moulamein Fire Brigade.

This will be followed by the usual ceremonies and our gallery mob has picked up an award this year.

Be sure to turn up and cheer them on.

The cost of the morning will be $5 for as much as you can eat and free for all school-aged children.

There will be a bit of a break.

We have our usual lake carnival with a jumping castle, canoe races and plenty more fun.

Then, as usual, we will have fireworks off Mount Moulamein just after dark.

Due to the generosity of Murray River Council, we have been able to keep the cost of both these events in Moulamein to a minimum.

Thank you to Murray River Council for helping us out to celebrate Australia Day in our great little town.

Bowls notes

I DID not get to write these notes last week.

It was not because we got beaten by the bottom team, Tooleybuc, or the fact that Choky Clarke’s mob got an absolute flogging while cool hand Luke Shields tried to save the day.

I would never mention that about old Choky.

One rink up, two rinks down.

Down by a heap overall.

I do not know why Tooleybuc is on the bottom, they have given us a hard time both rounds.

This week it was Murray Downs at home.

Could go to second spot or if the cards fell wrong.

Down to fifth spot.

Cool hand Luke and his mob had their usual game, even without Kiren.

Old Chokies’ mob came good and covered the third rink who had a bad day.

Two rinks up, one rink down.

Up by seven and the cards fell right so we got to second spot.

Tough game this week against Swan Hill on their turf.

Water for our lake

OUR Moulamein Lake has reached its peak for the season.

We have now only got 0.7 of a megalitre left.

Thank you to Murray River Council for helping us get our lake to this level and get this ski season out of it as well as keeping our fish alive.

As far as mental health goes, what this lake provides for the district is priceless.

You cannot put a value on the benefits of having somewhere to meet, somewhere to ski or just walk around it or sit and admire our lake or go for a swim.

Just another reminder that the locks have now been changed and memberships are now due. $150 for the season or $20 per day per boat.

Unfortunately, there a few that take advantage of our system so I keep asking everyone to lock the gate behind them.

It keeps the free loaders out.

Anyone can walk around our lake.

Fish off the bank of our lake or even swim in our lake for free.

There is even a free barbecue up there.

But, if you want to use your boat, it is user pay.

Please do the right thing by our committee.

River levels

THE Edward is rising very slowly at just under 2.4 metres and just below 2600 megalitres a day.

I think it will stay like this for a while to come yet.
