Rain at last

Rain at last

FINALLY, we have rain. And what a rain we have had. It took 17 hours to deliver a fantastic 60 to 75 mls to my farm. At least that is what I have had in my gauge. It does not get any better than this in March.

Any farmer that is not happy after this rain, all I can suggest is to sell the farm as you will never be happy. Except for Paul Fitzpatrick. He got bugger all rain, so he has got an excuse not to be happy. Keep it coming Huey.

Community invitation

MOULAMEIN Community Health Committee and the Local Health Advisory Committee extend an invitation to the Moulamein community to farewell Judy Gatacre after many years of service as our local bush nurse.

At the time of writing, I have forgotten the amount of years. Judy has been a part of our health service in town for a bloody long time.

Judy’s farewell will be held at our Moulamein Bowling Club at 12 noon on March 20. The cost will be $20 per head. Please RSVP by March 12 for catering purposes on 0402 121 485, 0429 875 141 or 0498 976 949.

One thing I have found out about Judy’s retirement is that she has told her farming husband Mike that she is retiring. Not becoming a cheap farm hand. Good luck with that one Mike. All the best in your retirement Judy, you will be missed.

Lamb supply chain

THE Central Murray Best Wool Best Lamb in collaboration with Weston Murray Land Improvement Group would like to invite everyone to this pilot workshop.

You will learn how to access feedback and use it to improve your business. You will know what your customer/buyer thinks is a good lamb. This will help you match your system to your target markets.

This will be held at the Swan Hill Club on March 16 between 3pm and 7pm, followed by dinner. With the price of lamb at the moment, this could be a great day out.

Please RSVP by March 13. For more information please ring Rick on 0428 372 357 or Kate on 0417 112 162 for more information or to book in.

New transmission line proposed

TRANSGRID is holding a series of information sessions on a new transmission line proposed for our region.

This is known as Project Energy Connect. To find out more, drop into one of their sessions that will be held at Moulamein Bowling Club on March 15 between 11.30am and 2.30pm.

There may be opportunities for local businesses to cash in on this deal. Drop in for a yarn. You do not know how good this could be for our district.

Footy-netball club

fishing competition

THIS great event happened last weekend. I am pretty sure there would be some very tired volunteers around as there were plenty that did their bit, plus a few more that did way more than their share.

Whoever organised this excellent event should sit back and say to themselves ‘well done’. With record entries of over 270 that must be fed five times. I would say very well done.

Thanks to Swan Hill Truck Service for coming on board this year as our major sponsor so we can keep this event going as well as everyone else that sponsors this event. Last weekend was great for our club as well as our town and district.

For more information google Moulamein Cash Classic or something like that to book in for next year and you will find out all about it. I am sure there is plenty of room for more volunteers next year, so if you would like to help and lighten the load. You will be made most welcome. There is always more room for more sponsors so if you would like to get on board, do not be shy, get in touch.

River levels

THE Edward River is continuing to drop slowly and is now sitting at just above 1.5 metres, just over 1300 megs a day.

I was hoping that the rains that we just had would have boosted our river flows, but we only just got a little bit extra down the billabong. Not enough to make any difference to the levels but it may get a few fish going.

I am keeping an eye on the Darling River, because if they can get a shitload of water down that river to the Murray, we may get some water allocation. I do not know this river. But the Cuttaburra River at Turra. Do not know where that is either. This river went from 60 megs a day to a maximum of 47,000 megs a day in a few days. It is still doing over 30,000 megs.

This is how quick things can change in our great country. I just need some of this flow rate down my creek so I can regain my job as an irrigator instead of being a professional sheep feeder.

My lambs are nine months old and they have never been off grain since the day they were born, and some of their mothers are not much better. So next time you buy your bundle of lamb chops and you think they are a bit dear, just give it a thought as to how we grow these bloody things when it has not rained for two years.

Just to rub salt into the wound, if it does rain a ton it will only get dearer as we need to build breeding numbers up again.

Welcome to my world where you actually have to pay decent money for what we produce. Job’s not stuffed in this case.
