Airport funding welcomed

COUNCIL has welcomed the announcement from Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormick and Federal Member for Mallee Anne Webster that the Swan Hill Regional Aerodrome received $1.2 million in funding for upgrades.

Council is matching this funding.

This funding will enable the aerodrome to increase its capacity, including allowing larger aircraft to operate at the airport. This will increase the connectivity of Swan Hill to domestic and global market opportunities, helping grow our economy. It will also provide access for larger aircraft used by emergency services.

The upgrades include strengthening the main runway, allowing larger aircraft to operate in all weather conditions and extending the pavement area for a Jet A1 refuelling facility for larger and emergency service aircraft.

The funding will also enable reconstructing and extending the existing taxiway to bring it to the same standard of the runway for the larger aircraft. This will also help council cater for growth at the aerodrome, supporting the aeromedical and other community needs.

Additional parking bays for aerodrome users including medical emergency aircrafts and to improve operational safety will also take place as part of the upgrades.

Grant for Swan Hill remembers

THE Swan Hill Regional Library is making a documentary-style film to honour men and women from our municipality who participated in World War Two.

Titled Swan Hill remembers, the film has been made possible thanks to a $9,000 grant from the 75th Anniversary of the End of World War Two Grant Program.

The film will be made by filmmaker Kristie Dean. Kristie is also behind the World War 1 documentarystyle film Beyond the Battle, which was produced by Gannawarra Shire to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

The film will be narrated by local playwright, Andrew Kelly.

Information for the project is being gathered by the library and members of the steering committee, Swan Hill Genealogical and Historical Society, Swan Hill and Woorinen RSL, Lake Boga Lions Club, Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum and The Guardian.

The library is aiming to have an exhibition of World War 2 memorabilia and artifacts from August 19, with the film to be launched at the opening of the exhibition (depending on coronavirus restrictions).

The library is also asking the community for any World War Two memorabilia, war records, documents, photographs, postcards and letters written to loved ones while overseas.

As well as the film paying tribute to our local connection to World War Two, the memorabilia will give the library an opportunity to greater capture information for its Local History collection.

The project team is particularly keen to find information on locals who were in the navy during World War Two or anyone who was an army nurse at that time.

Information needs to be provided to the library by Monday, June 22.

To find out more, call the library on 5036 2480.

Tourism signage replacement

COUNCIL is starting a replacement of local tourism signage under the state-wide tourism signage program.

Initial audits have been conducted to identify unnecessary or out of date signage, as well as remaining signs that have been subject to UV or other physical damage.

An audit of tourism signage in Robinvale and other towns will take place next month.

A staged roll out to replace the signs is being planned.
