Moulamein notes: June 26, 2020

Bowls tournament

WE are off and bowling again at Moulamein on July 4.

Our annual Houghton Bowls Day will be held and we have a new format.

Entry fee is $60/team, this includes lunch.

The day is pairs with three different types of games involved.

I am that keen to throw my balls around the green after such a long break.

That me and Hooker were the first to book in.

Get in quick if you want to get out and have a bit of fun.

I am sure entries will fill fast.

For more information, please ring Kerryn on 0407 800 111, or our Moulamein Bowling Club on 5887 5207.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Get in quick.

The people you meet

THERE was a car parked on the side of the road near my property the other evening.

Didn’t take much notice of it until I was going back past it and there was a bloke walking round in a fluro jacket.

I am a bit wary about that kind of thing at the moment so I had to stop and check him out.

It turned out to be Dr Dale.

Yanco Creek and Tributaries Action Committee (YCTAC) has hired Dr Dale to prove the ecological value of our creek system so those in charge do not dry it up for the benefit of the big pumpers on the Murrumbidgee River and my crow eating mates downstream.

Dr Dale and his offside were out collecting water samples to try and find platypus DNA.

There are platypus farther up our creek system so they may be down here.

We have them in the Edward River, so there is a good possibility that we may have them in our creek.

I have never seen one in over 50 years of living on the Billabong Creek.

But, that does not mean they are not there as they are a very shy creature. A bit like me.

Our Yanco-Billabong Creek system is one of the best cod breeding streams in the country.

But, that is not as important as sending freshwater out to sea.

New bowls president

IAN Beesey stepped up to take on the job of bowls president, Vicky stayed on as secretary at our bowling AGM on Sunday.

The vice-president job is still up for grabs and all bowlers are more than welcome to come to the meetings.

Thank you to Gonzo for his time at the top.

He has offered his help to Beesey when he needs it.

I am sure you will get a call or two Gonzo while Beesey finds his feet.

We do not know if we will get a bowls season this year because of this virus.

Bowls is a dangerous sport at the best of times. More bowlers die than any other sport people.

COVID-19 makes it even more dangerous. I am sure the new rules will be that there is no hand shaking before or after the game and there will be no touching of each other’s balls.

Keeping your hands to yourself will be the new normal.

Rain at last

IT took three days, but I was fortunate enough to score around about 10mm of beautiful soaking rain.

This should keep the crops and grass alive for another couple of weeks while we wait for the big rain to come.

Bill says thanks

BILL Stanley turned 90 last weekend.

Bill rang me just to ask if I could put a thank you in the paper to all those that made his 90th so special.

What could I say? Bill looks after our old court house as a volunteer when it is allowed open.

Bill was a shearer in his day and is never short of a story about the old days.

If you ever run into Bill, make sure you ask him the story about blowing the matches out from under the bed.

That is just one of many of Bills stories.

River levels

THE Edward is steady at just over 1.3 metres and just below 1100 megalitres a day.

Fish are not playing ball at the moment and it is very hard to get a feed. Surprisingly enough, yabbies are still going if you know where to look.
