Last week of social bowls, now we get real
WE still had new faces turning up to our Saturday social bowls.
We encouraged everyone that has played in our very social competition to come for the last week as well as anyone else that would like a game.
We had our usual 16 with a couple sitting on the side to make life easy for the draw.
There were plenty of good bowls, bad bowls and everything in between.
We hope we may gain a bowler or two out of this competition.
The highlight of my day was playing my old mate Gonzo.
He managed to get a schooner off me a few weeks ago, revenge is sweet and so was the schooner that Gonzo bought me. One all.
We will have to play a decider at training one night.
Pennant training has started on Thursday nights for those that want to get fair dinkum about their bowls.
We are entering a division one as well as a division four for this season, so we need more bowlers.
Everyone will be made most welcome.
We still need more bowlers as there is always someone away.
Rain a fizzer
WE all got very exited with the forecast, but it never happened with well less than 10mm in most gauges.
There are only showers forecast this weekend, so we will see how we go.
Rice started
THE buzzing of the spring bees was replaced with the buzzing of the ag planes this week with the first of the rice going in, with the new varieties that our rice growers are breeding.
The ideal sowing date is the 25th of this month for the standard varieties. I am sure the ducks have worked this out. No sign of turbo chooks yet.
Don’t get me wrong, rice is great for our district and I have a few hundred acres ready to go, I just need a bit more water.
Sheep are my priority and if you have hand fed as many sheep in the last few years as I have, you would understand why I am saving my water.
Rice is still king of our desert when we have enough water.
Unlike the permanent plantings, when water is short, we do not grow rice.
It will be great for everyone in our district to get to grow a bit of rice.
I am still ready, just not yet.
River Levels
OUR Edward has started to drop with the rice season kicking off and is now just over 1.4 metres and just under 1100 megalitres a day.
The Edward is around 600ML below Stevens Weir so it will keep dropping.
The Billabong will not help the levels much with 170ML coming past Bundy, the last meter on the creek.
Fishing reports are hard to get as there are still bugger all visitors.
I may know more after this weekend.
