Moulamein Notes: 12/3/21

THERE was a chance that our Billabong Creek could have been dried up a few times a year to keep other wetlands going.

Our Yanco-Billabong Creek system is one of the best cod breeding streams in our great nation, as well as having its own unique wetlands that seemed to get ignored when those that make the rules found some more important frogs and fish and birds.

There are more cod per square meter of water in our Billabong than in any other river systems. We now have a guaranteed 50 megs a day out the bottom of our creek into the Edward River at Moulamein thanks to YACTAC.

Our YACTAC committee stands for Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council. They have been putting in untold amounts of hours to keep our creek flowing — all of them unpaid.

We have a couple of experts on the payroll because we have to nowadays. Due to the expense of keeping what we have, YACTAC has had to put its membership fees up to $1000 per year. that’s up from $50 just a couple of years ago, but we have to keep ahead of those that do not value our Yanco-Billabong Creek system.

There are a fair few that think if everyone else pays it, they can hide and pay bugger all to ride on the shirt tails of those that do pay.

Some of those that do not pay their membership were the first ones to drive to Canberra to waste their time marching around just to be ignored by the media.

If our Billabong irrigators want to make a difference, please pay your membership ASAP.

Gallery Sculpture comp

THIS will be happening on the 11th of June 2021 if COVID allows. There will be two sections.

Section 1 is a large free-standing sculpture. The first prize is $2000. The sculpture will be acquired by our gallery. Second prize is $500.

Section 2 is a small free-standing sculpture of around 30cm x 50cm. The prize for this is $500 first and $200 second.

I will have to measure the one I made last year to see which section I can enter it in. I think it would go close to section 2.

I think the rules are it has to be made of mostly of second-hand steel that can be found on a farm.

Fish heading for the Edward

The Edward seems to be rising again at the moment at just over 1500 megs a day and just over 1.7 metres.

With more than 2600 megs coming past Stevens Weir, the fish will be back on the bite again.

I have not been to town to get the results of our fishing comp as I have been too busy getting ready for the watering season.

I think a 77cm cod took out the prize. More information next week.
