Moulamein Notes: 23/4/21

Moulamein Notes.

What a week in football

THIS was always a saying on a footy show on the TV.

Let’s rephrase that: what a week in footy and netball.

We headed off last week to Wandella like lambs to the slaughter for the first game for the season, according to the papers and radio programs.

I think one paper said that Wandella would win this and end up in the top echelon of the league again.

The paper also said that Wandella would win and the league would be hopping that Moulamein can put in a competitive effort.

I think the Mighty Swans did put in a very competitive effort to come out winners against one of the top echelon teams (whatever the hell that is).

We also won the under 17s footy. Our boys have recruited well and are looking good.

Our netballers also had a great day with A Grade and B Grade getting up.

B Reserve was not far out of it and our junior netballers also had a good day as well, but not quite getting over the line.

There are no records printed this year to learn our new players’ names. Evidently you have to download them or some modern crap like that.

I am sure if you old timers, like me, go up to the office and ask for a team sheet, they will print you one.

I did not know our players’ names on Saturday. I felt like a Melbourne supporter.

“Go number 6, great tackle number 31”, and things like that.

I also noticed all these strangers on the side line barracking for the Mighty Swans. At least I can meet them, I thought, and get to know their names.

They have kids playing for us, so they now support us. Introduce yourself to them and welcome them to our club.

This would be a great time to welcome all our new players as well as supporters to our great little club. I am sure you will enjoy it out here.

2020 was going to be the year of the Swans. Looking good for 2021 after one week.

Just remember, if I do meet you, but forget you the next week, do not be offended, it’s just me.

I am hopeless on names. I can remember your name, Glenn. I have just got to remember what you look like.

Your boy is number 31, I think. Could be a gun for our club, I think.

A time for reflecting

ANZAC week is always a big one, and we owe the Anzacs big time.

Some of them gave what you can only give once. Their lives. Others gave more than we can ever imagine.

The conditions they were in, and what they went through just cannot be described.

We have our usual Dawn Service in Moulamein at 6.15am. This will be followed up by a cooked breakfast for a gold coin donation.

There will be the traditional march at 9.45am.

Our Moulamein Public School is running this show and asks everyone to meet at the Business Centre at 9.15am.

All students are asked to wear their school uniform.

We should be at the Triangle at 11am and our Moulamein Public School students will proudly conduct the commemoration service.

Chairs will be limited, so please bring one if you need one.

The day will finish with another Anzac tradition with Two Up at the Tatts from 5pm.

All proceeds from the Two Up game will be going to the Edward River Gardens retirement home.

Hay booked out.

IF you were hoping to stay in Hay sometime in the next few months, I would advise you to call ahead.

They are doing some of the filming of the next Mad Max movie out at a place called One Tree so, every accommodation place is booked out while this filming takes place.

It could be a good time to visit Hay if you have your own accommodation. You may run into someone famous.

Chris Hemsworth is part of the Mad Max film.

You never know. You may get to have a coffee beside him.

I think this would be a very exiting time for Hay. They may need a few extras, so some of the locals may get a gig.

Twenty years on

IT does not seem that long since we lost a Moulamein mate in a tragic plane crash.

Neil (Slim) Arthur was a bit of a character in our district.

He loved his trotters and was known as Ben Hur because of the way he rode his trotters.

Slim was also a hard case on the Moulamein tennis courts.

He also seemed to be ahead of his time in his farming enterprise and was continually expanding.

But unfortunately, Slim was taken too early. Thinking of his family 20 years on.

Rice harvest ramping up

THERE are now a few crops coming down to the required moisture content to keep harvesting.

There are still plenty of headers going from crop to crop trying to find some dry rice to harvest. Keep looking fellers.

The moisture will come down. It is just a bit slower this year.

No rain forecast yet so all is good for the rice farmers.

Not so good for us sheep farmers or the winter croppers.

River levels level out

OUR Edward River has stopped rising and is steady at around 1.5 meters and just over 1200 megs a day.
