Around the churches

DESPITE COVID-19 restrictions, there are still people holidaying in Swan Hill, and all visitors wearing masks will be warmly welcomed at Christ Church “On the Hill” in Splatt Street.

There are services at 10am each Wednesday and 9.30am on Sundays, followed by a social cup of tea or coffee.

Visitors are also invited to stay in the church to look at the tapestries and the “Vine” on the wall to the right inside the entrance.

On Tuesday, January 18, the gospel reading, Matthew 16: 13-19, tells of Simon recognising Jesus as the promised Messiah.

A painting in the Lady Chapel depicts this moment, when Jesus names Simon as “Peter” (in the Greek language: petros, the Rock on which His church will be built).

The chapel also has a tapestry of “The Last Supper ” above the altar, and another of the Bread and Wine screening the Aumbry.

Those who visited between December 16 and January 6 would also have seen the assembly of a four-panelled wall hanging concluding with the arrival of the Magi.

All priests serving the Anglican Parish of Swan Hill from the 1800s have names and dates of tenure recorded on the tapestries in the left front rows.

On the right are the first notes of favourite hymns chosen by the members of the large youth choir of the 70s.

The rest of the Nave has tapestries of various Christian symbols chosen and embroidered by ladies of the parish.

Walking through to the function centre, two stained glass windows are seen set into the wall, and backing onto the Memorial Courtyard, a place for peaceful reflection.

On Sunday, January 23 there will be one service at 11am for the parish at Ultima, please bring own lunch.
