Drivers choose numberplate safety

AN operation by Swan Hill police to make vehicles safer has been a success, with 50 people taking up the offer of one- way screws for their numberplates.

Swan Hill police offered the security screws for free on September 17 at the tourist information bay opposite Swan Hill police station, amid rising numbers of thefts of registration plates from vehicles.

Swan Hill police Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes said on September 10, the woman customer became abusive and used indecent language towards a staff member when the coffee machine she was using didn’t work.

The woman was fined $330.

“It was picked up and used by an unknown person,” said Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes of Swan Hill Police.

“It was used on multiple occasions on this day (through the tap-and-go payment option) and some $670 had been racked up.”

The card has been cancelled.
