Highway death shocks truckie

POLICE say a driver is “distraught” after learning his truck hit and killed a man near Kerang last Friday morning.

Inspector Gerard de Vries said the Kerang man, aged in his mid-20s, was hit some time between 2.05am and 2.15am on the Murray Valley Highway at Reedy Lake, between Kerang and Lake Charm.

He was then subsequently hit by a passing Nyah West motorist just a few minutes later.

“The man was seen alive on the highway by a passing truck driver at 2.05am, then another truck has hit him within 10 minutes later.”

Major Collision detectives initially described the incident as a possible hit-run, but soon realised it was a large vehicle whose driver was not aware what had occurred.

The reason for the victim being in that location at that time is still under investigation.

“Through CCTV footage, we were able to identify another truck being involved,” Insp de Vries said.

“That truck certainly hit the deceased, with the driver completely unaware that he had hit someone.

“He has been completely co-operative and obviously distraught. It would appear the deceased was laying on the roadway when hit.”

Investigators were able to use CCTV from a business the truck stopped at to identify the vehicle involved.

Police thanked the public for their assistance. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
