Dael Newman, 41, appeared from custody at the Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to both charges.
Newman stabbed 58-year-old seasonal worker Dave Gaskell to death at his Manangatang property at about 9.15pm.
Mr Gaskell was found with critical injuries and police and paramedics worked on him a before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Newman had been charged with intentionally causing injury after attacking a second female victim, but this was downgraded to recklessly causing injury.
The court previously heard that Mr Newman was being medicated for schizophrenia and depression, lived with the spinal condition scoliosis and was addicted to opiates.
