Drivers back on the spot

PARKING meters in the Swan Hill CBD will be switched on from Monday after dozens were vandalised in April.

Swan Hill Council public health and regulatory services co-ordinator Kelsey Corrie said fines would be issued to drivers not displaying a valid parking ticket or obeying the signage.

“Parking turnover is important to ensure customers can easily visit local businesses and access services they need,” Ms Corrie said.

More than 80 per cent of the parking meters were affected by the vandalism.

“This disappointing act by mindless thugs will create a significant and completely unnecessary cost to local ratepayers,” Mayor Les McPhee said at the time.

The council did not estimate how much it had lost in parking revenue.

“There is currently a pending court case in relation to the vandalism of parking meters in the Swan Hill CBD,” the council said in a statement.

“Council cannot issue any further statements in regards to this matter until after the case has been heard.”

Two women, aged in their 20s, have been charged with criminal damage and bailed to appear at Swan Hill Magistrates’ Court later this month.
