Charity walker arrested

POLICE have arrested a registered sex offender who had been walking across western Victoria, including Sea Lake, to raise money for mental health.

Warren Wright, 49, was detained near Warrnambool on Monday while on his charity trek.

He recently walked down the Calder Highway with stops at Ouyen, Nandaly, Sea Lake, Culgoa, Wycheproof, Charlton and Wedderburn.

Two high-profile charities – R U OK? and Beyond Blue – cut ties with Wright after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a vulnerable 16-year-old girl in a Mildura caravan park.

During the trial, the court was told while the girl was naked in the shower, Wright pulled back the curtain and sexually touched her.

In November 2021, Wright was placed on a community corrections order for 18 months and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was placed on the sex offender register for eight years and on Monday was charged with four counts of failing to comply with his reporting obligations.

Wright fronted Warrnambool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he made no application for bail.

He was remanded in custody until Monday, when he is due to face the court for a further mention.
