Thief’s $4000 raid

A SWAN Hill business owner says he will reconsider future donations to charity after his store became the latest to be targeted by thieves.

On Sunday at 10.30pm, an offender smashed the front door of Syd Wilson Auto Electrics in Campbell Street and fled with more than $4000 worth of stock.

Security footage indicates that he was only on the premises a short time but appeared to know what he was targeting.

The footage also shows the man escaping on foot and dropping the stolen items several times.

Business owner Darren Scott said that it was disappointing that businesses were being hit all over town.

“What is annoying is, we as a business, provide lots of charity organisations with money and donations and the people that those charities are trying to help are the ones doing the damage,’ Mr Scott said.

“So why am I helping? I’m stupid, aren’t I?

“I should just say ‘no, sorry’, show them the photos of old mate and they can ask them why we are longer doing it.

“I am definitely going to re-evaluate what I’m doing on that front, that’s for sure.”

In addition to the value of the stock taken, there are also other costs associated with such crimes that are borne not only by the business owners but the public.

In Mr Scott’s case, there was the cost of the damage to the door, and the expense in further upgrading his security system.

Swan Hill police have a strong lead on the perpetrator and are currently investigating.
