RECENT “abhorrent” vandalism in Balranald and Euston has impacted tourism and safety in the area, according to Balranald Shire Council.
Police responded to reports of vandalism that included rocks and debris being thrown at caravans and vehicles as well as caravans being hit with golf sticks.
In a statement released on Monday, a spokesperson for Council said the vandalism had resulted in the shire receiving bad reviews on social media platforms, including WikiCamps.
“Tourism makes a vital contribution to supporting local jobs and employment,” the spokesperson said.
“This abhorrent behaviour will not be tolerated and needs to stop immediately.
“Aside from the impact on businesses, it is having a significant impact on tourism and the community from a safety perspective.”
New South Wales Police Inspector Prue Burgun said police have investigated the incidents and have spoken to children in regards to the vandalism.
Inspector Burgun said the police had taken appropriate action in relation to the children’s ages.
She added that police have increased their presence in the area.
“NSW police are committed to ensuring communities feel safe and will continue to provide a higher police presence as required,” she said.
