IT was an unlucky day for one Swan Hill driver caught hooning on Friday, September 13.
Police detected a vehicle travelling at 150km/h in a 60km/h zone on Karinie Street, Swan Hill, about 11.30pm.
The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and will cost the driver more than $1500 to retrieve.
The driver will also be charged with traffic-related offences and be summonsed to attend court at a later date.
A police spokesperson said under anti-hoon legislation, a vehicle may be impounded or immobilised, regardless of who owned it and whether the driver was the registered operator.
“If a person is found guilty of three hoon-related offences inside three years, their vehicle can be permanently forfeited by the court, which may result in the vehicle being destroyed or sold by the State,” the spokesperson said.
“In addition to the seizure or forfeiture of the vehicle, if found guilty of a hoon driving offence, the courts can impose a fine of up to 240 penalty units (more than $28,000) and/or a period of imprisonment of up to two years.
“The driver will also incur any demerit points and/or licence loss penalties applying to the underlying offence.
“Reports of hoon driving help Victoria Police target repeat offenders and focus on specific locations.”
