POLICE are reminding people to lock their cars and homes at night amid a spate of opportunistic burglaries.
Swan Hill Police Acting Inspector Brian Hansen said a string of car thefts and aggravated burglaries that occurred between the late hours of October 9 and the morning of October 10 would not have taken place if the owners had locked their house or vehicle.
“We’ve reviewed all these incidences, and they were not targeted but brought about by being able to get into vehicles or houses,” he said.
“Don’t leave items out in the open in a vehicle where it can offer temptation for an opportunistic offender.
“While it would seem statistically there has been an increase in offences, the offending has been attributed to only a couple of people and we know who they are.
“Our clearance rates have been very high because we have been able to establish who the offending parties are, and we have been able to hold the perpetrators to account.”
Insp Hansen said police are continuing to maintain strong visibility in the community with their patrols.
“If anyone is in need of assistance, all they need to do is call us or 000,” he said.
