Vandalism disrupts services

A PUBLIC toilet block at the Senior Citizens Centre in Balranald has been damaged following a suspected arson attack last weekend.

Balranald Police received the report at 10.30am on Saturday, May 11, and have since launched an investigation.

CCTV footage from the area has not yielded any useful leads, prompting a public appeal for information.

Balranald Police Sergeant Luke Haynes said: “We urge anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to step forward.”

“Please contact Crime Stoppers or get in touch with Balranald Police, referencing ID number E10122574.”

The damage has left the facility unusable and indefinitely closed, raising broader concerns about a growing trend of vandalism in the region.

The attack has drawn a strong response from Balranald Shire Council, which has recently faced similar acts across the town and neighbouring communities.

Balranald Shire Council general manager Peter Bascomb said the facility had been repaired earlier in the week after a separate, less severe incident.

“This time, the damage is far more comprehensive,’ he said.

“The toilets will have to remain closed for some considerable time.”

The vandalism disrupts services and risks damaging the town’s reputation with visitors.

“It’s a reduction in services for our community, but more importantly, it gives a negative impression to visitors,” Mr Bascomb said.

“Every dollar spent on repairs is one less for road maintenance or other essential services.”

Other council facilities have also been affected by graffiti and damage in recent weeks.

“This kind of behaviour shows a lack of respect for public property and for fellow community members,” Mr Bascomb said.

“These incidents tend to come in waves.

“People grow up, others move away, and incidents drop off, but then we see another wave.

“Overall, vandalism in all its forms, whether graffiti, tagging, or serious damage like this, continues to rise.”

Repairs will be subject to the council’s standard procurement process, meaning delays are likely as quotes are gathered and reviewed.

In the meantime, council has issued a public appeal asking anyone with information to come forward.

Despite the setback, Mr Bascomb said “Balranald is a fantastic community with a strong spirit”.

“Unfortunately, it only takes a few individuals to damage the reputation and resources of the community,” he said.

As investigations continue, police and council are urging the community to help protect Balranald’s public spaces by reporting any information.
