Barnaby re-Joyces in leadership spill

BARNABY Joyce has been named the new leader of the National Party – and Deputy Prime Minister – returning to the second highest office of the nation.

Mr Joyce defeated former leader Michael McCormack in a close vote on Monday morning, three years after scandal tipped him off the perch.

He was forced to quit in February 2018 after revealing he had been having an affair with his former media adviser.

Mr Joyce launched a similar campaign in February 2020, where he was unsuccessful.

Queensland Senator Matt Canavan moved a spill motion to bring on the leadership vote at a partyroom meeting this morning.

Leader of the Victorian Nationals, Peter Walsh, praised Mr McCormack’s loyalty.

“In the past three and a half years, Michael McCormack has been a great friend to regional Victoria, championing the issues and projects that matter most to our local communities,” Mr Walsh said.

“Michael has been a fearless advocate for country Victoria. He leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to build positive change in country Victoria for years to come.”

Mr Walsh made no reference to Mr Joyce’s appointment when asked by The Guardian.

Mr McCormack said he respected his party’s decision and wished Mr Joyce “the best of luck”.

“I’ll take some time to think about my future, but it’s also a humbling privilege to represent the people of the Riverina.”
