Peter Walsh backs new Opposition Leader Matthew Guy

THE Nationals leader Peter Walsh has pledged his support to new Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, saying Mr Guy has strong ties to Swan Hill.

Mr Guy took the leadership after former leader Michael O’Brien stepped down when a spill motion was carried on Tuesday.

Mr Guy was Opposition Leader at the 2018 state election.

“Matthew was actively involved in the campaign to rebuild the Swan Hill Hospital – he came to the township and listened to the people,” Mr Walsh said.

“That March as well, just before the election, Matthew came to town to spend the weekend with his family – he’s quite familiar with the area.”

Mr Walsh believes Mr Guy can bounce back from his previous election loss and looks forward to working with the Liberals.

“The Nationals and Liberals are committed to coming together to change the government – both parties are firmly in agreement that there cannot be another four years of Labor,” Mr Walsh said.

“There has been so much damage caused by lockdowns.”

In 2018 Mr Guy had pledged $44 million to the hospital upgrade if the state coalition between Liberals and Nationals had won the election.

Going into the 2022 state election, one of Mr Guy’s key promises has been to focus on improving the mental health and wellbeing of young Victorians through an expansion of the Mental Health Practitioner in Schools program.
