SHRCC mayoral election in November

THE election of Swan Hill Rural City Council (SHRCC) mayor and deputy mayor will be on Tuesday November 16 at 2pm, at a council meeting open to the public, as per Section 25 of the Local Government Act.

The current mayor Cr Bill Moar and deputy mayor Cr Jade Benham were elected on November 17 last year, and Section 26 of the Local Government Act requires the next election to be as close to the one year term as possible.

“Pursuant to the Act the council can choose to elect the mayor for a period of two years, and a decision must be made prior to the election,” chief executive officer John McLinden said at the September meeting.

“It has been the practice of this council not to do that.”

A motion was passed to have the election held at the November general meeting.
