Who will be your voice in Mallee?

VOTERS within the Mallee Ward of the Buloke Shire will elect a new councillor in the coming weeks, following the resignation of former councillor David Vis.

In the lead-up to voting, The Guardian spoke to the candidates to find out why they nominated, what they hope to achieve if elected, and the issues that are important to them.

Six candidates have nominated for the position and ballot packs were sent out to residents this week.

Buloke Shire has seven elected councillors, representing the shire’s three electoral wards.

Geographically, the Mallee Ward is the largest of the three wards, taking in the townships of Nandaly, Sea Lake, Berriwillock, Culgoa and Nullawil.

Election manager John Lyons advised residents to vote well ahead of the closing time to ensure their vote counted.

Voting is compulsory for State-enrolled voters, while council-enrolled voters in Mallee Ward are encouraged to vote but won’t be fined if they don’t.

Voting closes at 6pm on Friday, October 14, with results of the by-election available from Monday, October 24.
