Agriculture show funding scrapped

SCRAPPING funding for agricultural shows is is further evidence of Labor ripping money out of the regions, Member for Mallee Anne Webster says.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt told Senate Estimates this week that $14 million in funding for ag shows was being “reprioritised”.

Dr Webster said this “sadly proved Labor’s disregard for regional Australia”.

“These events are part of the fabric of Mallee towns, they are the single biggest event of the year for many communities in the electorate and this is hugely disappointing for them,” she said.

The funding was on top of $20 million previously provided for 122 shows to build new pavilions and exhibition areas, install seating, shade and weather protection, upgrade accessibility, improve public safety and animal welfare and upgrade power and energy efficiency.

“Ag shows generate a massive $1 billion annually in economic benefits, promoting new technologies and high-quality produce,” Dr Webster said.

“For some communities and charities, agricultural shows are the financial boost they need to get them through the year.

“They are also the platform for innovation and education, showcasing Australia’s food and fibre while promoting tourism.

Labor has said the funding will be redirected for other government priorities, Dr Webster said.

“Labor needs to explain why it diminishes the importance and value of regional and rural Australia,” Dr Webster said.

“It has abandoned our regional communities and taken the possibility of much-needed infrastructure away.”

Mr Watt’s office has been contacted for comment.
