– Introduce yourself and why you have decided to stand for council.
Hi, I’m Alison Linnett, I’m a Balranald local and raised my four children locally. I am now a proud grandparent of four and have been married to my husband Allan for 30-plus years. We operate our national transport business from Balranald, where I have been a teacher for over 30 years. I still love getting up and going to work each day. Working with children, our next generation, has always been exciting. The expressions on their faces when they learn a new concept is so rewarding.
I have enjoyed working as a volunteer on numerous committees such as the Balranald Race Club, Balranald Pre School, St Joseph’s P&F, Homebush Recreation Club Inc (gymkhanas, field days and rodeos), Balranald Shire Youth Council and recently Balranald Can Assist Branch. I am looking forward to learning first-hand howlocal government works, representing my community and Balranald district.
I wanted to run in the last local election but life was still very busy caring for my family. I feel that I have more time available now to devote to this position.
– Have you had any past experience in local government?
No, I have no experience in local government. I have taught the topics government and society to Year 5/6 students and have visited Parliament House and the electoral office during Canberra school excursions.
– If elected. what issues do you hope to address and prioritise during your time at council?
· Job opportunities for our children and growth for local businesses
· Land development for new housing estates
· Improvements for our parks and playgrounds
· Maintaining and improving our sporting facilities
· Access to medical services, mental health specialists and programs, and wellbeing activities
· Supporting aged care for our loved ones
· Developing roads and air strips.
· Discussing and addressing land rates and where to next?
· Emergency management, policies and procedures
· Promoting tourism, National Parks and our history
· Caring for our rivers and their environments and water sports, and
· Anything that will attract people to live and stay in our region.
– In what ways would you like to improve the municipality?
I want to see our communities benefit from industrial and infrastructure growth, allowing our local businesses to develop and prosper. Let’s continue to work together on improvements in our shire: roads, housing estates, medical services and employment opportunities for our youth.
