Ley in the fray

MEMBER for Farrer, Sussan Ley, will today(Tuesday 13/05/2025) contest for the Liberal Party leadership.

Late last week, Ms Ley released a statement announcing her candidacy in the wake of a devastating election loss for the Coalition which saw former leader Peter Dutton lose his seat of Dickson.

“It is clear that we got it wrong, and that Australia expects a change in direction and a fresh approach from the Liberal Party,” Ms Ley posted to Facebook.

“Many Australians, including women and younger Australians, feel neglected by the Liberal Party.

“We must rebuild trust with all sections of Australian society and my election as leader of the Liberal Party would send a strong signal that we understand things need to be done differently.”

Ms Ley has held the seat of Farrer for 24 years but suffered a -8.73 swing against her following a strong result from independent Michelle Milthorpe.

At the time of publication, the leadership will be a contest between Ms Ley and shadow treasurer Angus Taylor.

If Ms Ley is elected leader by her colleagues, she will be the first female Liberal leader in the party’s history.
